Johannesburg - A robber was shot dead and three were wounded after they robbed a pizza outlet in Fairlands, Johannesburg, Gauteng police said on Sunday.

The four were involved in a shoot-out with security guards on 14th Street on Saturday evening, Lieutenant Col Lungelo Dlamini said.

One of them was found at a nearby petrol station and died on Sunday morning. The other three were under police guard at the Helen Joseph Memorial Hospital.

"It is alleged that the manager of the pizza [outlet] who was outside the store was confronted by suspects armed with handguns. He was searched and his wallet and cellphone were taken," Dlamini said.

They forced him into store, forced staff to lie down, and took cellphones, a laptop, and cash. Security guards confronted the four and the shoot-out ensued.

Police recovered stolen goods and an unlicensed firearm. The three would appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court soon.
