Johannesburg - One person was killed and another seriously injured when two trucks collided on the N5, about 25km from Bethlehem in the Free State on Sunday morning, paramedics said.

ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson said the cause of the accident was not known but the driver of one of the trucks tried to swerve to avoid colliding with the other truck.

"The evasive manoeuvres were not successful and the first truck collided with the trailer of the second. The truck then overturned and crashed down a short embankment colliding into two trees," she said.

"The load of the truck crushed the cabin and the driver was killed on impact. His passenger suffered severe injuries and paramedics treated him en route to Mediclinic Hoogland for further care."

She said there were no injuries in the second truck.
