Johannesburg - One person died and four others were injured in a collision that led to a second accident on the N3 near the Marianhill toll plaza in KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday, provincial Emergency Medical Services said.

In the first incident, two trucks collided and one person died on the scene, KZN EMS spokesperson Robert Mckenzie said.

"While emergency crews were working on scene, another truck crashed into the accident scene, smashing into a tow truck, fire engine and KZN EMS response vehicle", said Mckenzie.

Four people, including two paramedics, were injured in the second crash.

Meanwhile, a third accident occurred on the opposite side of the highway.

It was unclear whether any people had been injured in that collision.
