Cape Town - One person was injured after a part of the ceiling collapsed in Sandton City, Julie Hillary, general manager of Sandton City, said in a statement.

She said that the person was receiving medical attention and that the area had been cordoned off. Hillary said that a small portion of the ceiling between the banking mall and Nelson Mandela square caved in.

ER24's Werner Vermaak told EWN that parts of the roof debris fell on top of the injured person, and that she sustained a possible fracture to her ankle and had a deep cut. He confirmed that she was stabilised at the scene and taken to hospital.

"We would like to assure our customers that the safety and security of all shoppers and tenants is of paramount importance."

"Determining the cause of this incident is our number one priority and it will be thoroughly investigated," she said.
