Johannesburg - One person was killed and 14 others were injured in a collision involving two cars and a minibus taxi on the Golden Highway in Vanderbijlpark on Friday, paramedics said.

"One person was found with fatal injuries. Six people were found in a critical condition, four of them were children below the age of five years," said ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak.

"It is believed that two light motor vehicles collided head-on with each other. Paramedics also found a severely mangled taxi in nearby veld."

The minibus taxi appeared as if it overturned several times before it landed back on its wheels.

"They [paramedics] found it difficult to determine which patients came from the taxi and which ones were from the two vehicles as the majority were flung from the vehicles during the collision."

The driver of the taxi was found trapped in the vehicle and had to be freed by the local fire department using hydraulic rescue equipment.

Vermaak said the majority of the patients sustained severe head and chest injuries.

"One of them sustained a partial amputation to one of his limbs."

The injured were transported to Sebokeng and Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospitals.

The cause of the collision was not yet known.
