Durban – A man has been killed and another critically wounded in a shooting in Durban early on Sunday morning, a security company said. A third man was beaten repeatedly with a firearm.

The three men tried to hitch a ride from a driver in a white bakkie belonging to an unknown security company in Inanda Road, between Mountview and Brindhaven, in Verulam.

Head of Reaction Unit South Africa Prem Balram said the three men and the occupants of the bakkie began arguing. The driver of the bakkie sped off. He returned, accompanied by three men in a maroon car.

“According to the [beaten] victim, he was assaulted with a firearm repeatedly. One of the suspects shot his friend in the chest. He died immediately," Balram said.

"The suspects then shot his other friend in the abdomen."

The beaten man broke free and fled to a nearby service station for help. He returned to the scene with the police. They found "the lifeless body" of one of the men on the pavement.

KwaZulu-Natal Emergency Medical Services spokesperson Robert Mckenzie said paramedics declared one man dead on the scene. The man with the gunshot wound was rushed to hospital in a critical condition.

The condition and the whereabouts of the beaten man is not known.
