Pretoria – Oscar Pistorius is “broken” and needs a lot of healing, a former Paralympic teammate said on Tuesday.

Dewald Reynders said he had not spoken to Pistorius, but his lawyers had told him that he had lost a lot of weight.

“I think Oscar needs a lot of healing,” Reynders said. He was outside the Waterkloof, Pretoria home of Pistorius’s uncle Arnold on Tuesday morning to support the family.

He had been friends with Pistorius for 11 years. Reynders said Pistorius was a kind soul and a dear person.

“He was a kind soul toward me, my mother, and even the guy doing my garden.”

Pistorius was released from Kgosi Mampuru II prison on Monday evening to serve out the rest of his five-year jail term under correctional supervision at his uncle’s house.

He was sentenced to five years in jail for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine's Day 2013.
