Cape Town - The liquor licence of the owner of a Khayelitsha tavern where a stampede led to the death of eight people has been revoked, the Liquor Licensing Tribunal ruled on Thursday.

Presiding officer Vincent Bergh confirmed that the tribunal unanimously found Phumlani Abraham, owner of Osi's Place, contravened the licence conditions by failing to "exercise proper control over the premises to ensure that clients leave the premises orderly".

It further found that he had allowed underage patrons onto the premises and allowed the minors to consume liquor at the tavern.

"The tribunal also found that there was no evidence to satisfy it on a balance of probabilities that the premises were overcrowded," Bergh said.

Six people died in June after a metal railing on an outside staircase gave way. Two more were killed when the vehicle they were transported in, crashed on the way to hospital.

Abraham, who will not be able to apply for a liquor license for the next five years, may appeal the ruling.

He refused to comment.
