Johannesburg - Over 50 000 walkers and 1 500 dogs took to the streets of Johannesburg to participate in the Discovery 702 Walk the Talk event on Sunday.

Among the walkers were a number of high level government officials and prominent South Africans, the organisers said.

These included Johannesburg's community development MMC Chris Vondo, Speaker of Parliament Max Sisulu, Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa, deputy health minister Gwen Ramakgopa, deputy sports minister Gert Oosthuizen, Gauteng police commissioner Mzwandile Petros and Gauteng's new health MEC, Hope Papo.

Other personalities included Miss South Africa, Melinda Bam and Miss Teen South Africa, Celeste Khumalo.

"It is always inspiring to see people coming together from all walks of life to join each other in a fun, feel-good activity," said Pheladi Gwangwa, Talk Radio 702 station manager.

Gwangwa said the station was overwhelmed by the turnout and the spirit of people of Johannesburg.

Walkers came in all ages, sizes, and shapes, and ranged from the serious competitors who took part in the 30km and 15km distances to families who walked with dogs and prams.

"Walk the Talk is all about fun and family engagement traits that support our core purpose of making people healthier, and enhancing and protecting their lives," said Jody Foster, Discovery head of sponsorship.
