Over 90 to appear in court for looting violence

2015-01-26 06:12

Johannesburg - Over 90 people, including children, are expected to appear in the Kagiso and Magistrate's court on Monday on charges of public violence and being in possession of stolen property following a week of looting in suburbs across Soweto.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-General Solomon Makgale said 178 people have been arrested in the violence, labelled by some as xenophobic, sparked by the shooting of 14-year-old Siphiwe Mahori last week.

The boy had allegedly been part of a group who set upon a shop kept by Somali national Senosi Yusuf on Monday. He was shot dead when Yusuf allegedly shot at the group.

Yusuf would also appear in the Protea Magistrate's Court on Monday, on a charge of murder.

Makgale said 83 people had already appeared in the Protea Magistrate's court and there cases were remanded to January 28 and 29.

Six of those were children who were released to the custody of their parents.

Besides Mahori, a 19-year-old youth was shot in Naledi on Wednesday and was declared dead on arrival at hospital.

According to The Star, Nhlanhla Monareng was killed when police fired into a crowd gathered at a Pakistani-owned shop. He was a bystander and reportedly friends with the Pakistanis.

The Star also reported that 74-year-old Malawian shopkeeper Dan Mokwena was attacked and killed as he slept in his shop in the early hours of Wednesday.

A baby was also trampled to death when a crowd was running away on Friday.

Makgale said police would keep monitoring the affected areas and asked the public to report any looting.

He also asked that shop owners not take the law into their own hands.

Deputy Minister in the Presidency Buti Manamela asked people to take responsibility for events of the past week.

"Crime is crime - you cannot justify it," he said.

He condemned the looting, saying those leading it would turn against their neighbour once there were no foreigner-owned shops to loot.

"They will look next door and say 'you are Venda therefore you must go to Venda', or, 'you are a Xhosa you must go to Pondoland'."

A group called the Africa Diaspora Forum said the attacks were xenophobic and not simply "crime".

Some reports have suggested that use of the drug Nyaope may also be a factor in the violence.

Send them all to jail and teach them that looting is not in order irrespective of what they learn from Zuma and his cadres.

      George George - 2015-01-26 06:44

These youths were driven by desperation. So you DA24 and your gang of insulterers you keep sowing hatred and then see whether your burgler bars are thick enough

      Akhenaten C.T. - 2015-01-26 06:46

George, is that a threat? So you are in fact a criminal.

      Dawid Venter - 2015-01-26 07:11

George George AKA Anthony (hop hop) Dafo. Go look in Krugersdorp is a WHITE squatercamp. Yes a lot of poor people are really also poor. The difference is that they did not VOTE to be poor like the anc cadres did. And do you see them looting out of desperation.? So shut up.

      George George - 2015-01-26 07:24

David, you operate you mouth before your mind is in gear. Of the 25 million voters which did not vote for the DA, 11 million find more hope inthe ANC, The remaining of the 25 million which did not vote found nothing on offer by the DA because the hatred campaign of the DA was unattractive to this vast market which could have put them in power. But the DA gang has learned nothing as they find hatred and insults much more easy than constructive initiative

      Karen - 2015-01-26 07:30

I wonder how George is writing because he does not have a profile on FB?

      Dawid Venter - 2015-01-26 07:39

Goerge George your hate for the D.A who fired you because of your thieving habits is obvious. You still have not answered my question? Because you are to busy hating the D.A than to see what your ruling party has f-Up once again.

      Pat Riot - 2015-01-26 07:44

      Desperation for woonga & nyoape....

      George George - 2015-01-26 07:49

David, that you could not find the answer speaks for itself in the same way that you could not find your own Anthony rethoric. Wishing you a great year at Grade 4 this year.

      Warren De Bruin - 2015-01-26 07:51

George George. Fire those few braincells in your head up and try and come up with a few comparisons between your ANC and any other 1st world government... Now once you've tried that I would like you to do the same comparison with 1st world citizens. If you do indeed have any ability to think independently perhaps you'd see that there are none and that we are indeed a country run by criminals and supported by a criminal majority. You my friend need to catch a huge wake up, which I doubt you will, because your uneducated point of view is feeding the sharp demise of what was once a great country with huge potential in Madibas hands. Now it's just a free for all run by your band of bigots led by JZ.

      Nico de Jongh - 2015-01-26 08:39

Dom George get this.. 3 minutes no air, 3 days no water, 3 weeks no food is what your body can handle so please shove that desperado crap. Hatred breeds hatred but us whiteez don't go out and KILL .. self control keeps us above your uncivilized lifestyle.

      Feik Mc Heither - 2015-01-26 08:57

But what George is saying is...25 million don't like the ANC but they couldn't find an alternative, which could have been DA but with all the bile spewed here on N24 by white people (thank heavens they don't represent the majority of white people in the country but have caused as much a damage) the voters chose not to Vote at all. Imagine if all these 'angry' voters went ahead and voted for other Parties? 25m is a VERY BIG number. Trolls will always be there, but if a Troll gets so many thumb ups for insults, then we have a big problem.

      George George - 2015-01-26 09:00

Warren, not much logic in your arguments but lets make some comparisons:Our growth rate some 2,5%, Tanzania: 7,5%, Zambia 6,7, Namibia 5,1Greece -3,3%, France 0,3%, Spain -1,2%, UK 1,7%, Germany 0,1%, Japan 0%Ours can be better if we can overcome corruption which can largely be ascribed to the settlement of 1994 when Bg Business in London traded the political power of the Nats for them retaining their ill gotten wealth and left he political empowered masses empoverished. And of cause we have certainly the most useless and negative opposition in the DA which could with all their Big Business sponsored resources only muster some 22% of the electorate and 13% of a possible electorate. So David I dont hate the DA, only their style and uselessness. In fact there is little more I am wishing more than a constructive opposition. Wow, I would love consulting them in addressing a market with 87% market scope. Must be much more exciting than the insult campaign of DA and DA24

      Warren De Bruin - 2015-01-26 11:49

Shame George George. It seems you have exceeded my perceptions of your ignorance. Since you seem so adept at googling stats and comparing them in your "unbiased" way. Try researching simple statistics like unemployment rate per country, affordability stats per average household income, crime rate/violent crime stats, cabinet salaries comparison, investor confidence graph.... Now if you can still come and tell me our government is steering us on an upward curve in the graph then there is no hope for you. Probable GDP and GEP growth does not represent what livelablity and safety conditions average citizens live in in this country or any other.
