Port Elizabeth - The search for a missing fisherman continues off the coast of Port Elizabeth.

The man, who apparently was not wearing a lifejacket, is believed to have gone overboard on Sunday.

NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said that rescue volunteers from the Port Elizabeth base were informed by the Transnet National Ports Authority of the emergency.

"At 15:30, a fisherman was reported overboard the fishing vessel ELKE-M, 40 nautical miles South West of Cape Recife," Lambinon said.

"It appears that the fisherman, reported to not be wearing a lifejacket, was noticed to be missing at 14:00 and was believed to have last been seen on-board at approximately 12:00 and he is believed to be missing overboard."

Lambinon said that several fishing vessels had swept the area for the missing man without success.

"The fishing vessel Sandile conducted a search but no sign of the fisherman was found. Adding anything else would be pure speculation."
