Pietermaritzburg - Two Maritzburg College boys are on a quest to set a new world land speed record, using a rocket-driven model car.

For the past seven months, Christopher Swan and David Smith have been working to ensure they are ready for the Bloodhound SSC world record attempt, which will be held at Hakskeen Pan, Northern Cape, next year.

“We have been putting in two hours, three days a week,” said David.

Bloodhound SSC is a high-technology project to design and build a car that will break the 1 000 miles per hour (1 600 km/h) barrier and set a new world land speed record.

The current record stands at 800 miles per hour, which was set by Andy Green in 1997, before the two were born.

Both 17 this year, they vowed to make Green eat their dust.

Green will return next year to take the Bloodhound car’s wheel and try to break his own record.
