Cape Town - A 60-year-old man, who went out to fish from his paddle-ski off Mnandi Beach along the False Bay coast on Monday, had to be rescued when increasing wind speeds prevented him from paddling to shore, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said.

NSRI Strandfontein station commander Mario Fredericks said the man from Plumstead launched at Mnandi Beach for what was a daily leisure activity.

"But strong off-shore winds began to pick up suddenly at around 10:00 while he was only a few hundred metres off-shore. The man tried to paddle back to shore, but increasing wind speeds prevented him from getting to shore," said Fredericks.

"He was able to reach rocks at Kapteinsklip, off-shore from Mnandi Beach, and sheltered there when bystanders seeing him in peril raised the alarm.

"While responding to the scene, we alerted the local law enforcement marine officers and they launched their rescue rigid inflatable rubber-duck at Mnandi and rescued the man from the rocks and brought him safely to shore without incident."

The man's paddle ski was also recovered.

"The man was not injured, but he was extremely grateful for the quick response..." Fredericks said.
