Pietermaritzburg - A man facing charges arising from an alleged attack on a foreign national who was allegedly assaulted with an axe and covered with white enamel spray paint on January 7, was back in court on Monday on another assault charge.

Avikar Lutchman, 27, of Northdale was arrested at the weekend and charged with assaulting Amanda Govender on Saturday (July 18) by hitting her in the face with a bottle.

He is also charged with crimen injuria for allegedly calling Govender a “bi**ch”.

He appeared briefly in the magistrate’s court in Pietermaritzburg on Monday and was granted bail of R500, as the state did not oppose bail for him. The matter has now been postponed to July 28.

Lutchman and a co-accused, Shadrack Wayne Naidoo, 28, are currently out on bail in another case in which they are charged with the attempted murder of Malawian citizen Bilaz Asan.

In that case, they are charged with assaulting and attempting to murder Asan by attacking him with an axe, pouring thinners over his body and spray-painting his naked body with car paint.

They are also charged with assaulting two other people on the same day, at the same premises in Violet Road, Northdale. One of the alleged victims, Pilendren Chetty, was allegedly hit with a hose. The other – a 17-year-old girl – was allegedly grabbed by her T-shirt and hit.

The investigating officer said when opposing bail in that case earlier this year, that his information was the assaults were sparked by the accused’s rage that repairs to their vehicle were not completed.

The two men were denied bail at first, but later succeeded in getting bail.

They allege they acted in self defence.

Their trial in that matter is pending.
