Painting 'makes a mockery of Zuma'

2012-08-29 08:03

Cape Town - The new painting of President Jacob Zuma in traditional garb and with his genitals exposed has drawn a mixed reaction.

Eyewitness News reported that the painting by Ayanda Mabulu was part of an exhibition entitled “Our Fathers” at the AVA Gallery in Cape Town.

The painting called Umshini Wam (Weapon of Mass Destruction) was apparently the big draw card to the exhibition and on sale for R75 000.

While some art lovers said they didn’t see a problem with the painting, others said it was disrespectful of African culture.

But Mabulu says of the painting: “[Zuma] is a representative of the ANC, which as a political party from my perspective, now represents its own interests, and less so, the interests of the people.

“Through this painting I respectfully, as one of his children, ask my father why he is starving us. Why he is negating his duties to his children, the citizens of South Africa?”

Meanwhile, the ANC condemned the painting, calling it “disrespectful”.

"We condemn this painting in the strongest terms. Any portrayal of President Zuma in this way is disrespectful," ANC spokesperson Keith Khoza told the Mail & Guardian.

"It makes a mockery of the president's office, his status as a father and a husband, and is an absolute abuse of the arts."

  • charlesdumbwin.dumbwin - 2012-08-29 08:08

Not sure why the Prez is so peeved. This 'spear' looks bigger than the last one.

      Rabbler.Rouser - 2012-08-29 08:12

Is the ANC going to go hysterical and beserk all over again? That's a serious weakness over a painting.

      michael.vanrheenen.9 - 2012-08-29 08:17

Zuma does not need a painting to be made a mockery off... I also want to see marches to that gallery and court orders and stuff like they did with poor Brett! An eye for an eye! If this does not go further then I know the ANC are racist!!!!

      nicholas.graan - 2012-08-29 08:19

I guess this time around though, because the artist is black, there will be no howls of "racism", no marches and no threats to burn the gallery down?

      daniel.jacobs.3766 - 2012-08-29 08:20

Zuma makes a mockery of the Precidency.

      patrick.buckley.712 - 2012-08-29 08:21

In a country of 50 million people, this ladies and gentlemen is who was chosen as our president. The entire world is laughing at us!

      alf.pop - 2012-08-29 08:29

The headline should read Zuma makes a mockery of the painting. He diminshes the value of the art work.

      paul.coetzee1 - 2012-08-29 08:50

And the 2012 Press Association "Newsmaker Of The year" is.................(drum roll).........our Presidents Dong. What a laughing Stock SA has become.

      arthur.hugh - 2012-08-29 08:53

Zuma is a mockery of the painting.

      thabang.bonang.7 - 2012-08-29 09:13

More important issues need to be discussed and not this foolishness. Lonmin, corruption, Zumaville, service delivery, police brutality, etc. Someone is trying to deviate us from the real issues. I Will not be surprised if this painting was planned by some of our president's supporters.

      jackal666.daniel - 2012-08-29 09:24

Here comes the Film and Publication Board! LOL!

      moi.carla.1980 - 2012-08-29 10:25

@timmy - I find this so amusing. Anytime a black individual does or says something that does not fall into your idea of what they should think/say, you immediately label them as wanting white approval. Is it that hard to accept that although someone shares your skin tone, their views and opinions differ from yours??

      klippies.coke.7 - 2012-08-29 11:13

What do they mean the painting makes a mockery of Zuma? Zuma makes a mockery of Zuma! Malema makes a mockery of Zuma... and ofcourse, Trevor Noah makes a mockery of Zuma:

      smalefane - 2012-08-29 11:14

The more I read comments by whites...the more I understand what Malema is fighting for. You folks are not looking for a better president. You just want a white president.

      patrick.buckley.712 - 2012-08-29 11:24

Smalefane: Get your brain sorted out! Who cares what colour the president is........ A choice however between Zuma and Malema, is like asking if you prefer AIDS or CANCER.

      nadia.graf.50 - 2012-08-29 12:28

Why worry about a penis when we get to see the whole "prick" everyday on TV!

      smalefane - 2012-08-29 13:37

@chris.novak.9235 - of course, you are a product of white supremacy. I don't mind buying you a one-way flight ticket to Australia.

      procold2 - 2012-08-29 14:07

zuma should buy the painting and kiss the artist he is a 70 year old and the paintiing depicts him with a 25yr old's pr#ck

      Hemlock - 2012-08-29 14:30

      It's also a lot uglier.....eeeuuuuwwwwww !

chris.novak.9235 - 2012-08-29 17:18 me what you want, if its going to make the country better I am all for DA (the white supremacy party to you I am sure.)! And you started with the "White" thing, and I am proud of being white, it does not make me a white supremacist. Idiot!

      fred.warren.986 - 2012-08-29 20:26

I don't see what the big fuss is about? The painting only depicts Zuma in his traditional dress. This is what the big chief would had looked like before the Europeans brought civilization to southern africa.

      martin.britchford.9 - 2012-08-30 07:00

So so soooooooo proud of my president, people dont take the p1ss unless you deserve it jacob, go to h3ll zuma...

      martin.britchford.9 - 2012-08-30 13:54

the best way to prove anc racism is fo an indian and coloured artist to now paint similar images of the spear, we have the "white" and "black" versions, now lets bring the rest of the rainbow nation in on this and see... the last tim i still think was to destract from the info bill or etolls or the mdluli mission, nothing to do with disrespecting a potato president

  • herman.heil - 2012-08-29 08:08

Zuma makes a mockery of zuma, doesn't need any help.

      andres.dewet - 2012-08-29 08:39

True that. Sorry, but Marikana, OR Tambo ANC vote, Basic Education crisis, Limpopo prov. administration fiasco, Malema gone wild, Madonsela's unearthing of horrible maladministration... And this guy wants our respect? Sorry buddy, this is a democracy, in a democracy, respect is earned. Pity they can't use the race card defense on this one. Glad the artist is of colour, because now the ANC has to face up to reality, that our president is a lame duck. It has nothing to do with the colour of his skin, it has to do with the "colour" of his integrity and leadership.

      Rudolf - 2012-08-29 08:44

@Herman - What I was going to say...

      kala.bafazi - 2012-08-29 09:42

Any picture of the president should be "fuzzed" out. The man is a d!ck.

      deirdre.maule - 2012-08-29 10:00

@annman ..."our president is a lame duck" I would have used a fowl of a different feather to describe him, perhaps the other word for rooster?

  • magoro.mags - 2012-08-29 08:10

Am no JZ fan,but these....this is just not art.

      wesley.bischoff - 2012-08-29 08:25

      That opinion is subjective

      andres.dewet - 2012-08-29 08:40

Art is in the eye of the beholder. That is the essence of art. So, because you don't see it as art, that in itself therefore, makes it art.

      Vince.York - 2012-08-29 19:24

and a Statement is a STATEMENT - so you in a way are quite right! You can dither in what you say (or display) and so can everyone else / without bringing education to a halt as ministers and teachers rush for a break to get close to the "d**" in question. It is your RIGHT to do so. I have to agree though - any depiction of zuma, even official photo's are horrendous and not art in my eyes, and simply FOISTED upon all our eyes.

  • gvangreunen - 2012-08-29 08:11

JZ seems to do a perfectly good job of making a mockery of himself ... and this country!

  • Msika - 2012-08-29 08:13

Why is the spear hidden?? It wasn't hidden on Brett Murray's painting.

      charlesdumbwin.dumbwin - 2012-08-29 08:15

Do you really want to see the horn of Africa?

      koos.vandermerwe.75 - 2012-08-29 08:17

      It's smaller on this painting.

      SharonE - 2012-08-29 08:38

At least with this painting you don't need to wonder if it is Jacob or Vavi. It really does look like him! Reminds me of the time when he had his traditional garb on and fell over. Bet everyone there had an eyeful that day!

      koos.vandermerwe.75 - 2012-08-29 08:48

@SharonE: Hehehe I remember that. He is so top heavy not even his big European tekkies could keep him and his man boobs up on that one. Was funny as hell.

  • danny.levin.351 - 2012-08-29 08:16

No, the painting merely represents what one citizen thinks of him. Zoomer makes a mockery of himself and of every institution in the country. I wonder if the ANC is going to label Mabulu as racist...

  • phumi.ntlabati - 2012-08-29 08:17

I have been saying this to my comrades that we need some element of radical shift from this neoliberal constitution of ours to give it some teeth. If we could also include some of the progressive laws of the Sharia Law to address some our social ills we will go a long way! These artists will know the limits of freedom of expression under these laws if we adopt them!

      Msika - 2012-08-29 08:23

      Sharia Law, are you serious???

      deon.fourie - 2012-08-29 08:23

      press.enter.12 - 2012-08-29 08:35

Will be interesting to see if the Comrades are going to march again to suppress freedom of speech as in Bret Murrays case or if they are openly going to show their racist roots by not marching b'cause this time around its a black artist . . . . .

      malemaisawanker - 2012-08-29 08:43

I agree............that way we could hang all the rapists and murderers..........oops, then our ANC government would have to move offices to the nearest cemetry.

      bomb.technician.5 - 2012-08-29 08:59

I have no problem with that long as we also then cut off thieve's limbs, and behead murderers, rapists, drug dealers etc......oh ja, like one of the comments above.....then the cANCer supporter base will drastically decline. Or do you want to selective again at how the law is applied???

      christo.crous - 2012-08-29 09:23

@ Phumi.. just read some of your other "smart" comments on your FB page. You are so clueless, but you think you know it all. It's people with a warped mind like yours which will force any country/ business to its knees.

      johandebeer - 2012-08-29 10:01

      kooskanmar - 2012-08-29 12:17

Phumi - We haven't got enough rocks in SA to stone all the corrupt ANC members in this country, but it's worth a try.

  • koos.vandermerwe.75 - 2012-08-29 08:18

  • alaina.nel.12 - 2012-08-29 08:19

There no-one that has respect for Zuma.People paint him as they see him.He himself has no respect for himself. So why must we have respect for him.Is he not ashamed that he is just a joke.?Step down zuma and crawl into the first hole big enough for your head to fit into.

      Msika - 2012-08-29 08:51

Or big enough for his "Umnshini" to fit into.

  • mario.dippenaar - 2012-08-29 08:21

Just got back from a trip to Scotland which involved people from all over the world and trust me, from hearing their opinions of Zuma, a painting is the last thing they mock him and the ANC about...

  • arthur.salvado - 2012-08-29 08:27

Hello, here we go again. This painting is complimentary to what the world thinks of Zuma . Mr President, you have failed your people and it's nice to see that inspire of your failures, the people still have a sense of humor. Now, have a giggle and be nice.

  • dave.gray.549221 - 2012-08-29 08:31

  • lntshabele - 2012-08-29 08:32

Ayanda wanted to be on the map I guess. Why didn't he paint himself with his own penis out? I doubt Ayanda is an African man who was taught to respect. If he think our president is wrong, does he think him also being wrong will make it right? My sisterly advice to you is Ayanda, go back to Ubuntu board and find yourself because you are so lost.

      Million Zim Dollars perhaps

      koos.vandermerwe.75 - 2012-08-29 09:05

Million Zim Dollars? I think that is less then a roll of toilet paper... mmmm Yeah that makes sense. I know what I will be using to wipe myself with in 10 years.

      brytzishiri - 2012-08-29 10:01

For your information Zim uses US$

      Msika - 2012-08-29 10:07

For your information, they once used Zim Dollars. A million Zim dollar was estimated to be equivallent or less than the value of a roll of toilet paper.

      peter.t.viljoen - 2012-08-29 12:40

Yup, I have a 250 Trillion Zim Dollar note. Its so worthless there is an expiry date printed on it. Go Africa you good thing.....

      koos.vandermerwe.75 - 2012-08-29 13:18

@brytzishiri: At the height of the Zim $ it was literal cheaper to wipe yourself with the money instead of buying toilet paper. Like Peter said "Go Africa you good thing"!

      gerrit.vanpletzen - 2012-08-29 15:02

      anneck.cranke - 2012-08-29 21:27

With Zuma and friends in power? I think the South African rand will be worth no more then the Zim Dollar in the years to come.

      pisciotta - 2012-08-30 00:32

If SA had a respectful place in the world I would agree. But SA is not even considered civilized by other respectful nations. Do you see items of Saddam, Idi Amin Dada and the likes going for sale on the world market? No. Once people like Zuma are put to rest their legacy...using the term loosly, vanishes. The world does not give a damn about SA because it lost its opportunity to prove itself worthy of owning what it asked for.

  • roger.howdy - 2012-08-29 08:40

Lets see IF the ANC is going to break down and Cry in Court again... IF they do not take this up to the Highest levels and make the same amount of drama over this, THEN they will show that they are Racist and that their words are empty and full of cr@p. Just as they love to teach and play the Race Card for everything else that happens.. Come ANC we are waiting.

  • yrhonour.honour - 2012-08-29 08:42

You see Ayanda reminds me a little of the twat who messed up the national anthem in France a few years back and like Malema he is Captain Hindsight - picking on dead bones... The only problem is with this childish display is that Zuma probably doesn't give a toss but a large portion of the black race take this as a personal insult...anyway it's really pointless - 2012-08-29 09:01

hey its his claim to fame, what are you gonna do ? Wonder if the ANC will do all the other things they did with the murrey painting ? you know, marching, making the country "unrulable" ect ect ect....or will they now say its art and must be appreciated ...because of the colour of his skin ?

  • - 2012-08-29 08:43

i think what ayanda should have done is paint penises of all the anc leaders.

      bomb.technician.5 - 2012-08-29 09:01

The President makes a mockery of himself every time he speaks enters a room etc, you do not need a painting to mock him at all.

  • shereen.vanschoor - 2012-08-29 08:48

It makes a mockery of the presidents status as a husband and father! I think he did that himself when he decided to marry 5 women and lets not mention what he did to a daughter's friend. So please Mr President, stop contradicting yourself.

  • joe.diedericks - 2012-08-29 08:50

Penis = Starving us??? Not sure that when I look at a penis that this is the first thing that comes to mind. What is next, a painting where Winnie is hanging out the window of a car speeding away from cops while her breasts are dangling in the wind? The obvious question in my mind would be why are you naked in the back of your official vehicle, but from an artist perspective the question would be what? Why are you staring us?

  • whoowhoohoo - 2012-08-29 08:52

Powerful Greek lords have sculptures with their genitals exposed, they never complained and people love them. A simple painting of Zuma moves the nation, it just shows how easily moveable we are. Umshini\r\nWam doest mean Weapon of Mass\r\nDestruction, it means My machine. Ask any Zulu. - 2012-08-29 09:03

Its funny, when they are painted this way, they cry, but in their traditions where nudity is part of daily life (reed dance, traditional dress etc)it is accepted. Why preach the importance of your traditions to the world, and then want to hide it when it is used by artists to convey messages and feelings.

  • smellarat.smith - 2012-08-29 09:15

I am definitely not narrow minded, but I am absolutely disgusted with the ongoing cheap shots at Mr. Zuma masquerading as art. I find the efforts of the pothead "artist", and the very flaky art gallery representative to frame this production as more than vulgar provocation absolutely unconvincing. Washing your hands with "it is not our controversy" is arrogant and ignorant beyond belief. If you idiots go on like this now, what are you going to do when someone like Malema succeeds Zuma? Because whether you like it or not, if Zuma is taken down it would be someone like Malema that will rise, and not someone like Helen Zille. And Malema's thugs would sort out your gallery in no time.

Timmy, or is it Gadaffi reincarnate? We most certainly did not hate Madiba, and I venture to say that most of us don't even hate Zuma. We are just disgusted that such a buffoon could become president of our beautiful country. We deserve better, such as Dr Ramphele, who's black, by the way. For the record, I think the painting is a pathetic (and pretty disgusting) attempt to climb on some sort of bandwagon. But perhaps we should remember O R Tambo's daughter's remarks in connection with "The Spear". You reap what you sow.
