Johannesburg - Three men accused of robbing and assaulting a Pakistani national appeared in the Viljoenskroon Magistrate's Court on Friday, Free State police said.

"The case was postponed until next Friday for a formal bail application," Captain Stephen Thakeng said.

The men, aged between 22 and 25, face charges of robbery and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The 28-year-old Pakistani man was working at his tuck shop in Rammulotsi, Viljoenskroon, on Tuesday morning, when a man allegedly confronted him and hit him on the head with a hammer.

"He fell on the floor and he saw two additional men taking money and packets of cigarettes with the value of R200."

The man was taken to a local hospital, where he was in a serious but stable condition.

Off-duty Constable Thabo Mohlakoana from the Viljoenskroon police station received a tip-off about who the attackers were.

They were arrested on Wednesday. The stolen items were found in their possession.

Viljoenskroon station commander Lieutenant Colonel Kolisang Sello said he was proud of Mohlakoana and thanked local residents for coming forward with the information.
