Palazzolo lawyers try to stop deportation

Johannesburg - Alleged Italian mafia member Vito Palazzolo's lawyers have approached the Western Cape High Court in a bid to keep him from being deported to Italy, according to a report on Friday.

The 64-year-old's lawyers are trying to get an order to have the South African government give him diplomatic assistance as his chances of being deported to Italy would be diminished if the embassy could confirm his citizenship, The Times reported.

Palazzolo is currently in jail in Thailand after flying there from Hong Kong.

He is allegedly a wanted member of the Sicilian mafia and is being investigated for money laundering.

The probe was started by the now-defunct Scorpions and taken over by the Hawks.

In March 2003, Palazzolo was found not guilty of fraudulently acquiring citizenship by the Cape Town Regional Court.

This man has been living in the lap of luxury on a farm in Franschoek from his ill gotten gains. He has obviously greased the palms of many a South African to get where he is today in this country. Disgraceful the way these criminals land up in our country. He must stand trial for his mafia crimes in Italy. Thailand must deport him!!

Thailand will take no nonsense, if he is innocent he must go back to Italy and proof it, it is better that South Africa does not get involved, it will only end up costing the tax payer more money, let him go back to Italy There is no smoke without fire, they obviously been looking for him for quite some time and have gone to a lot of trouble in finding him and waiting for the right time to nab him. He obviously is up for some serious crimes, yep, all these old farts that thought they were untouchable when they were younger, look at them when they get older, their time is done it is time to pay the piper.

People from other countries are helping the government breaking SA, Nigerians included. SA is crime heaven!

  • Bibi - 2012-04-20 16:19

SEND HIM BACK TO ITALY. There are far too many Mafia-type foreigners living in SA with the government's knowledge.

This man has been evading the wheels of justice for far too long. Send him back to his homeland in chains and let the Italians deal with him as they see fit. People with power and money get off the hook so easily, it's a disgrace!
