Pants stripping - 2 jailed

Johannesburg - Two men accused of stripping a woman of her pants were sentenced in the Umlazi Regional Court on Friday, the Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) said.

Spokesperson Javu Baloyi said Thulani Cosmos Cele was sentenced to four years and his co-accused Sibusiso Cele was sentenced to a year.

The two stripped Zandile Mpanza's pants in Umlazi, claiming that no woman should wear pants in Umalzi's T-section.

"The sentence meted out to the accused is indeed effective and strikes a balance between the interests of society and that of the accused, which is appropriate in the circumstances," he said.

" Ms Mpanza has welcomed the guilty verdict of the Umlazi Regional Court in December 2010 as well as the sentencing of the accused today (Friday), stating that she now feels that she can get on with her life."

He said the sentencing and incarceration of the accused had sent a clear deterrent message that injustice against women in society would not be tolerated.

Sentence seems a bit harsh to me.

      ProudofPink - 2011-05-14 13:23

Harsh? You obviously weren't the one having your pants pulled down!

      Banned - 2011-05-14 14:18

Pompie, if it was your mother's pants they pulled down, what sentence would you then suggest?

Good Who did those pricks think they were. no respect for women and trying to make their own laws.

  • pompie1 - 2011-05-14 13:38

Jail sentence seem to be inappropriate in this case. These guys are seriously ill-informed and should rather attend some corrective programme. 4 Years, eish...

      Snoopy88 - 2011-05-14 14:02

No its appropriate. We need to make sure that no other fools get it into their heads that they can take away the human rights of others!

pompie, is there something in your past that you need to get off your chest by any chance?

This will teach the heathens that South Africa is not one of those countries where women are subservient to the men...send all these heathens to the Middle East where they will be welcomed with open arms.

They will only serve about a month an will then be released.

If a mob of girls pulled down the pants of a boy in public, what would/should the sentence be? I assure you the girls will not get a prison sentence of 4 years.

Well done! A strong verdict against making women victims of prejudice.

  • pompie1 - 2011-05-14 16:19

Ok, apparently she was physically assaulted and paraded naked too besides pulling off her pants. Then I agree with the sentence. I thought they only pulled off her pants.

Did you think they were playing around? In most Southern African traditional value systems, it is vulgar for a woman to display her pubis. Skirts are de rigueur. Naked breasts are OK though. In Zim you can get fined for wearing shorts and exposing your midriff. (They don't have much of a beach culture). In Swaziland women are routinely attacked and abused for wearing pants. No now these big men from Umlazi, south of Durban also reckon they live in some kind of 18th century village and attack and humiliate this young woman. Equal public humiliation and corrective action would be my preference, but failing that, a couple of years might be just enough for a good think.
