Papers served on Tlokwe councillors

Johannesburg - The ANC served court papers on 48 Tlokwe municipal councillors on Wednesday, following Mayor Maphetle Maphetle's unseating, the DA said.

North West Democratic Alliance leader Chris Hattingh said the documents were served on 26 ANC councillors, 19 DA, and two Freedom Front Plus councillors, and one of the Congress of the People.

Maphetle and Tlokwe speaker Barei Segotso filed the papers in the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria.

Hattingh said the DA would respond to the application on behalf of its councillors, and was considering a counter-application.

"While we proceed with our efforts to end Maphetle and his former mayoral committee's illegal occupation of the municipal offices, we will also continue with our planning and endeavours to have the Tlokwe municipality restored back to delivery mode."

On Monday, African National Congress North West acting secretary Gordon Kegakilwe said the party had filed papers.

The ANC wanted last week's council meeting, at which DA councillor Annette Combrink was voted in as mayor, nullified. The ANC did not recognise Combrink as mayor and said Maphetle still held the post.

Combrink was voted in as the new mayor last Tuesday, the second time since November, unseating Maphetle.

Hattingh said at the time that 29 councillors of all parties, including the ANC, unanimously voted to return Combrink to the position of mayor.

Last Wednesday, the North West ANC's provincial disciplinary committee expelled from the party 14 of its councillors who voted to unseat Maphetle. They were also removed as Tlokwe councillors.

At a provincial working committee meeting in Potchefstroom on Monday the ANC appointed six new proportional representation councillors for the municipality.

By-elections would be held soon to elect new ward councillors.

One man,one vote, does that ring a bell? This was a major slogan before 1994,but now the rules will be changed, because we(cancer) are losing voters?Accept the defeat and eat some humble pie.

      Ronald Gibson - 2013-07-10 17:12

That one man that has one vote in SA comes with a qualification. The validity of that "democratic" vote depends if the man is loyal to the ANC Feeding Trough Club(valid, democratic and pure as the driven snow), or loyal to the best interest of the inhabitants of South Africa(not valid, not democratic, and agent and "racist")

      Kuno Tschumi - 2013-07-10 17:44

just wonder if the cANCer ever tried to figure out why its own people voted against the corrupt criminal major. instead of expelling councilors and serving papers rather ask why it happened and investigate the corrupt major.

      Richard Scully - 2013-07-10 18:39

      Or some KFC

      Given Von Baloyi - 2013-07-10 23:04

Which constituency are those councilors represent? The people of Tlokwe voted for the ANC therefore those councilors should follow the will of the people.

      Given Von Baloyi - 2013-07-10 23:09

Kuno, both criminal and internal investigation are ongoing. Why those ill discipline councilors could not wait? DA would have done the same had they had such members.

  • Moss Kop - 2013-07-10 16:03

Why the court? This is not the ANC that we know. Go to the bi-election and let the people of Tlokwe decide.

      Klaus - 2013-07-10 16:17

The ANC you know has turned into a CancER, out to destroy South Africa - IN YOUR NAME, as you have voted for them???

      SoutieTwo - 2013-07-10 16:46

The anc that I know necklaced people who were opposed to them.

      Ronald Gibson - 2013-07-10 17:15

Ha, the DA is constantly chastised by the ANC for running to the courts, what will they say of their own actions? But then some are more equal than others in the eyes of the ANC.

      Freddy van Wijk - 2013-07-10 17:26

The ANC we all know is like an octopus. Chop one tentacle off another grows back on again to hold on to power at all costs.

      Richard Scully - 2013-07-10 18:41

Gwede Manprickshe telling the DA they must stop running to court hahahahaha

  • Bradley Liebenberg - 2013-07-10 16:03

    Throwing a Tantrum are we...???

  • Dee Bone - 2013-07-10 16:04

ANC is a waste of time and money. Our time and our money

  • pws69 - 2013-07-10 16:07

The ANC are just trying to buy time until the by-elections. By my calculations, if half of those vacant wards are lost by the ANC, then the ANC are out, with no more court cases. The by-elections give the people the opportunity to get the council they want. Let us see what happens.

  • Alexander Du Plessis - 2013-07-10 16:10

ANC employing DA tactics ... BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA ... also, aren't the courts "racist" according to the ANC? serving some "agenda"? waste of tax payers money, why not let the voters decide in a by-election as is protocol? besides, if they'd cleaned house as they should've then their mayor wouldn't have been kicked out, again.

      Marc Celliers - 2013-07-10 16:30

Alexander. If they cleaned house like they should have then the 'mayor' wouldn't have been in the office anymore anyways.

  • Seiso Mohlala - 2013-07-10 16:15

The ANC needs to learn that party partisanship no longer appeal to the majority of our people. What they need is tranaparency, clean governance, accountability and service to the majority of our people.

      Jeremy Forbes - 2013-07-10 19:48

Very well said Seiso, sadly the party I once voted for are completely intoxicated with lust for power, privileges and stolen wealth that they are unable to do what is right, that is sacking the mayor, praising the Councillors for their anti-corruption stance and finding another way forward.

  • Louise-Roger Higham - 2013-07-10 16:17

ANC cannot accept defeat. Wake up they don't want you there.

  • Sht Stirrer - 2013-07-10 16:23

DEMOCRACY (the ANC definition): A process where the will of the people is much less important than power grabbing, and a tantrum and court action automatically follows an undesirable outcome.

  • Happy Skye - 2013-07-10 16:33

    Up the reds.

  • JudithNkwe - 2013-07-10 16:34

What exactly are the councillors being charged with?

      Jurie Nel - 2013-07-10 16:39

      Excellent question, Judith.

      Heibrin Venter - 2013-07-10 16:50

There is a difference between being served court papers (in this case, most likely to appear in court in another matter, namely the nullification of said council meeting), and being charged with a crime or sued by another party.

      Char Ou - 2013-07-10 18:28

For bringing the ANC into disrepute. Its fine.... I laughed at that aswell.

      CALAMITYSA - 2013-07-11 06:07

      Sht Stirrer - 2013-07-11 09:53

They are charged with being too intelligent.

  • Motlogelwa Seloana - 2013-07-10 16:42

what do they(anc) think they r? they must accept defeat and move on. they must do damage control rather than fyting court, its only a waste of time and money

  • Anthony Spruyt - 2013-07-10 16:48

Wasting money again incompetent corrupt ANC nincompoops. Just die already or go to jail Maphetle.

  • Patricia Dewet - 2013-07-10 16:57

Hope the party is paying and not the municipal taxpayers. More money will be wasted.

  • Wikus Erasmus - 2013-07-10 17:04

If democracy doesn't dance to the ANC tunes they go to court. How is that respectful of the democratic process?

  • R. Retshe Mahuma - 2013-07-10 17:25

so the #ANC would rather expel members who have morals, pursue justice and work for the good of the people in their constituency; and keep a corrupt and unethical but "loyal" member as council member #tlokwegate

  • Jurgen Eksteen - 2013-07-10 19:03

Wait until Maphetle goes home and then clear out all his stuff out of the office, change the lock and put his stuff outside the building or on the sidewalk. Why is that so hard to do? The only way this can't work is for him to sleep and live in his office.

  • Glyni Loxton - 2013-07-10 19:05

This is shocking. ANC is not accountable to anyone, unstoppable in steam rolling over us all, including their own members. Anarchy!

  • CALAMITYSA - 2013-07-11 06:03

Can Maharaj please explain why they condone the mayor's corruption. As corrupt as the normal "culture" in all municipalities?

  • Mzi Jimmy Maphosa - 2013-07-11 22:01

Eish can someone please mention the names of these political imbeciles. You cannot go to bed with your politcal opponent against your own mayor. This is political suicide they will never forget.

  • Bob Small - 2013-08-24 21:03

This is the trouble with politicians in Africa! Once they hold office they seem to have the belief that they hold that position for life and own it outright no matter what! Little brain syndrome at it’s best!
