Bloemfontein - A parabat was admitted to hospital with chest injuries after he flew into a rugby post during a welcoming ceremony for soldiers returning from the Central African Republic on Thursday.

He was conscious after the incident and was rushed to hospital by ambulance, Volksblad reported.

Hundreds of residents and schoolchildren watched as the soldier, a member of 44 Parachute Battalion in Bloemfontein, came in to land at the Mangaung Outdoor centre.

A source named the injured soldier as Bambiso Bhejane.

An army spokesperson said strong wind could have been a factor in the accident.

“It is sad that this incident happened on the day on which dead and injured soldiers in the CAR were honoured. We didn’t expect something like this,” said Major Faith Mokou.
