Shots fired at school prize-giving

2012-11-06 08:00

Johannesburg - A prize-giving ceremony at a Gauteng primary school turned into chaos when shots were fired during a fight between parents over a parking spot.

The argument apparently started after two mothers arrived with their young daughters at the Culembeeck Primary School in Witpoortjie west of Johannesburg, reported Times Live.

The mothers started arguing with another parent over the same parking spot and one of the women went to fetch a relative for help.

"When the man arrived, the argument escalated. It was crazy. People were screaming and shouting, children were crying," said a parent who didn’t want to be identified.

"The gunshots came from nowhere… the person just pulled out a gun and started going wild …. people were trying to hide, some parents were lying on top of their children. It was as though the world was ending."

The two mothers were shot in the feet and the man who was helping them had a bullet graze to the head. They were taken to hospital for treatment.

A police spokesperson confirmed the incident and said a suspect had been taken into custody.

LMAO, are SOuth Africans so desensitised to violence that we are now stariting to have gunfight at primary schools, the poor kids that were there my gosh.

      squeegee.pilot - 2012-11-06 08:18

Expel the parents and keep the kids...

      cyril.laubscher - 2012-11-06 08:44

Cant believe it such violence over a parking spot, its sad to think what people will use as an excuse for violence. Feel sorry for the poor children who have to grow up in a houshold like that.

      lorain.maseko - 2012-11-06 08:46

I think from now on when there are parent events at school thre will have to be heavy police presence at the school.

      maylani.bezuidenhout - 2012-11-06 09:31

Going postal over a parking spot...? we are really starting to lose the plot..

      trevor.myburgh.12 - 2012-11-06 09:50

They are a bad excuse for being a parent, I live next a creche and people park in my driveway, I can't get in out out of my own driveway. one of the mothers parked in my driveway and I ask her not to park there she swore at me and left I just left it, three days later her husband came around and threaten to beat me up, he was standing shouting, cursing, swearing while his wife was standing watching, smiling with her two children as if she just won the lotto. Another bad example of a parent

Witpoortjie.... the envy of Boksburg !!

      beverly.young3 - 2012-11-06 21:48

yeah and a farmer shoots at protestors and get arrested for murder? BTW who takes a gun to a school meeting?

      LutherKingsley - 2012-11-07 09:54

Its time that the media is allowed to publish the race, gender and age of assailants. How can people prepare themselves or come forward with information if they don't even know what the thugs looked like. Crime stats show 90% of all violent/brutal crimes are committed by black males, but there might be a rare occasion where the assailants were white and then a chance at arrest is lost, because basic character information was not available

Can I send my kids to you too? The jungle seems safer than our schools at the moment.

      jurgen.eksteen - 2012-11-06 08:25

Better get them some kevlar to wear and some ballistic helmets, because in South Africa they will always be living off of SOMEONE'S land and in most cases they will be shot at.

      junebugg.kinte - 2012-11-06 09:54

@Rachel.Hattingh Yeah at least we can watch Batman in cinemas in peace...unlike Norway our kids can go camping without worrying about a psycho who will run wild on the with all kinds of ammunition.

      j.r.neilson - 2012-11-06 16:01

@junebugg - yeah just don't mention how we manage to kill 5 under 7's a day in this country, and kill almost 18000 people a year (you know having one incident where less that 200 get killed is so much worse...)

      chantal.lawrieross - 2012-11-07 08:13

So agree with you j.r neilson. I would rather have that one incident than have to deal with the ridiculous amount of senseless crime South Africans deal with on a daily basis

  • ChiomaDidiOkoro - 2012-11-06 08:20

damn, is the ordinary south African woman walking around with a gun in a hand bag? I'm not disputing parking with anyone anymore.

      michelle.h.koekemoer - 2012-11-06 08:49

If I read correctly one of the women called a relative to help and that is when it escalated and the shooting started...

      kobie.nel1 - 2012-11-06 09:04

Wait, something sound funny here: "The mothers started arguing with another parent over the same parking spot and one of the women went to fetch a relative for help." To me that sounds like the two mothers arrived together, and they started a argument with a third person. No gender is named for that person. "The two mothers were shot in the feet and the man who was helping them had a bullet graze to the head. They were taken to hospital for treatment. A police spokesperson confirmed the incident and said a suspect had been taken into custody." Sound like the forth person was the shooter and the two mothers and the relative was wounded.

      lorain.maseko - 2012-11-06 09:40

Same here, you can have the parking, i just thought that it's a norm to have a little arguement over parking, which generally takes about 10 seconds and everybody is over it and we all move on without giving it a seond thought, but clearly some people take their parking spots very seriously.

      carol.brand.5030 - 2012-11-06 12:59

she went to fetch a relative, dude, pay attention. How did they get shot in the feet?? that's what i would love to know?

  • godesha - 2012-11-06 08:20

This is shocking!!! What a beautifull example were they setting for the children? "Look children, this is how you solve problems, with violence". Then we wonder why some of the young ones are out of control. Sjoe.

  • njabs.ngcobo - 2012-11-06 08:21

  • Sibusiso Van Der Sambo - 2012-11-06 08:21

  • Sowhat? - 2012-11-06 08:24

"The gunshots came from nowhere… the person just pulled out a gun and started going wild " between the two mothers, the other parent and the man, who pulled out a gun?

      susan.t.soutar - 2012-11-06 08:51

Based on the fact that the two mothers got shot in the feet and the man who was helping them got a bullet graze to the head, I would assume the other person? Unless it was one of the three injured and they were really bad shots!

      kobie.nel1 - 2012-11-06 09:07

"The mothers started arguing with another parent over the same parking spot and one of the women went to fetch a relative for help." • nkosingiphile.cofu - 2012-11-06 09:21

Are our schools a safe place to be for our kids and teachers? Obviously not. Schools must be a safe zone nobody must be allowed to bring any sort of weaporns either legal or illegal. Such behaviour from parents is an embarassment and it shows that some parents are irresponsible and are setting a bad example for their kids.

  • auntie.lebo - 2012-11-06 09:24

They should make it compulsory to speak to a psychologist in schools, at work, in prisons everywhere in SA. There's too much anger building in people's hearts so when they get ticked off by the slightest things such things happen, which we read about everyday this is not normal.

  • Boitu.m - 2012-11-06 09:28

All this over a parking spot?! Really?! Couldn't either one just drive away to avoid unnecessary drama?! The question going around my head is what kind of upbringing are kids getting? With such parents, are TVs mostly to blame for violent behaviour in kids? Or are they simply acting out what they've seen their family members doing? Just wondering...
