Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande has come out to address protesters at Parliament.WATCH

Cape Town - The parliamentary precinct was evacuated on Wednesday afternoon as student protesters continued to block the gates over proposed fee increases.

News24 reporter on the scene Jenni Evans said parliamentary staff were being led down to the bottom gate.

She said one of the police officers told staff, "People! Come, come, come! This is not a walk in the park. We are busy with an evacuation."

Earlier a children's tour group were also led out to safety as students banged on parliamentary gates.

She said staff laughed and chatted over the dramatic events of the afternoon.

Sirens were heard in the distance and a high wind blew water bottles and papers around.

Some of the staffers asked if it was safe to take their cars or if they should catch a bus home instead.

Earlier thousands of students broke through the gates of Parliament, demanding that Higher Education and Training Minister Blade Nzimande address them. He was, however, booed when he eventually made an appearance and failed to address them.

A parliamentary press briefing is expected to get under way shortly.

Students are protesting nationwide against proposed fee hikes for 2016.
