Parole officers evicted for unpaid rent

Johannesburg - Parole officers were forced to operate from a pavement in Johannesburg after being evicted from their office because the rent had not been paid, the department said on Tuesday.

"Initially, our staff [was forced] to operate from outside the office in an attempt to keep systems going," said correctional services provincial spokesperson Koos Gerber.

He said alternative measures had since been put in place.

"The area commissioner of correctional services has arranged that the [division] temporarily operates from his office at the management area at the Johannesburg Correctional Centre or 'Sun City' as it is known."

Gerber was responding to an Inkatha Freedom Party statement that it was appalled at the situation.

IFP Gauteng caucus leader Bonginkosi Dhlamini said parolees and probationers were being registered and interviewed at a desk on the street.

"This ridiculous matter surfaced weeks ago, yet the department has not made the necessary action in an effort to resolve it," he said.

The division was evicted from its premises in Frederick Street in Johannesburg on 3 August after the department of public works failed to pay the rent.

The IFP alleged that the department owed around R2m.

Gerber said the problem would possibly be sorted out by the end of the week.

It seems that things are getting worse on a daily basis. Every day there is some new failure exposed. We have a beautiful country but unfortunately not a great one.

My Thoughts are if they have not paid the rent where are they going to get the funds from now. They Had a Budget. Money was given to them to pay the rent from central Government where is the Money. I will tell you where its gone: Big tents and fancy parties.Shopping sprees. Expensive luxury cars. Re Furbished Houses. And some for the back pocket mmmmmm sorry a lot for the back Pocket. From Office to street to non existence that is what i foresee in all our Public Departments if they were businesses they would have been liquidated by now. But sad to say you and me will still end up paying for all the mistakes of our leaders.
