Tonga - An Mpumalanga man previously convicted for rape has been allowed to apply for bail in a more recent rape case.

The parolee, Lucky Sibiya, 31, of Zibokwane village near the Swaziland and Mozambican borders, pleaded not guilty to a charge of rape when appearing in the Tonga Magistrate's Court on Thursday, a Sapa correspondent reported.

Sibiya was expected to be in prison until 2018 after being convicted of rape several years ago, but was released on parole in 2011.

He was rearrested on 27 January this year after being accused of raping a 25-year-old woman who lives in his village.

The court reviewed his case and gave him a chance to apply for bail. Senior Magistrate Sam Nkuna postponed the application to 4 August.
