Johannesburg - Heavy rainfall was expected to hit several parts of the country on Saturday evening, the SA Weather Service reported.

Forecaster Edwin Thema said Midrand, Edenvale and Germiston in Gauteng experienced rain accompanied by large hail earlier in the day.

In the Eastern Cape, widespread showers were expected in the midlands of the province.

"Localised flooding was forecast from the Hermanus to East London region," said Thema.

Heavy rainfall was also expected in parts of Kwa Zulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and the Free State.

Four people died when heavy rains and storms hit the Eastern Cape and Mpumalanga during the week.

A seven-year-old boy in Nkomazi died on Tuesday when the roof of his home collapsed.

Three people in the boy's household were hospitalised with serious injuries.

Five others from nearby homes were also injured.

On Wednesday night a policeman and two other people drowned when their car was washed away during heavy rains near Peddie in the Eastern Cape.

Rescue teams recovered the three bodies on Thursday morning

Disaster management teams were on standby in both provinces on Saturday.
