Parts of SA to swelter in extreme heat

2013-01-16 09:18

Cape Town - Large parts of the Western Cape and Northern Cape are sweltering in extreme heat with temperatures soaring to just over 40°C in some parts.

The SA weather office warned on Tuesday that unusually high temperatures were expected for the West Coast as well, reported Die Burger.

Forecaster Henning Grobler said temperatures would remain high on Wednesday.

“To be honest, on Wednesday it will be a bit hotter and only begin to cool down on Thursday and Friday.”

Another warning for unusually and uncomfortably hot conditions was issued for the Cape Winelands and Eden district.

On Tuesday, temperatures of 41°C and 44,5°C were recorded respectively at Upington and at the Augrabies Waterfall.

How can anyone like the summer??? I am barely out of the shower and already soaking in sweat, I am irritated as my workshop at my business is already boiling, you can only take off that much clothes, the garbage bins already brake out in maggots like after three days because of the fast decomposition due to the heat and it stinks like hell! I cant sleep due to mosquito's and at day there are more flies than one could imagine. My poor dogs suffer like hell and has to be cooled down with the hosepipe quite regularly. My car feels like an oven with the air con not making much of a difference since it takes a wile for the coolness to kick in. But everybody loves the summer! Not me!! Wish I had the finances to emigrate to Iceland or Canada!!

lol! I have to agree with you. I'd love to migrate like birds, but in the opposite direction. I never did understand it when someone says it's a lovely day and yet it's 35 degrees. There's nothing lovely about that. At all. Even if you're on a summer holiday and camping next to a lake, 35 degrees is just plain uncomfortable.

Me too Jaco, much prefer the winter...glad it's not only me that struggles, even if I have had 5 years to try and get used to the heat!!

      toni.sanna - 2013-01-16 10:27

Africa is NOT for sissies .....

      DuToitCoetzee - 2013-01-16 10:56

@ Jaco I feel the same re summer. I choose winter, but maybe the two of us is to "dik". Well I am lately tooo "dik". lol. I have a friend that is now coming to visit from Amanzimtoti. The 1st remark, when she esquire about the weather, was "o nice". I hate the humid weather of Durban, but lately we(Cape Town) also have a higher one than normal. I was as high as Koekenaap along the West coast this past holiday and the locals and I could not believe the humid heat.

OMW, how I agree with you. Lol I just mentioned on FB a few days ago. I could go live with the Eskimos. Without a doubt. Give me the winter anytime.

      PureProteas - 2013-01-16 11:28

yip me too, cant wait for winter

      john.knipe.10 - 2013-01-16 12:14

My son has moved to Canada and the max there is -14.

      graziella.roux.7 - 2013-01-24 20:42

Hey Jaco, we are in Canada been here for 6 months now from JHB. We are in the middle of an extreme cold weather, the past couple of days it has been -22 with the wind chill! So when I read your comments about not enjoying the extreme heat and wanting to move to Canada, I had to laugh and reply. This weather is no fun, layers of clothing just to go outside. If you are not used to this kind of winter its not very nice. The snow is very nice to see but boy does it make a mess. I would have the heat any day!

Live on West Coast. Spent my Xmas bonus on an aircon for the house. We now keep cool...and contribute a bit extra to enhance Eskom's cashflow.

  • fishycraig - 2013-01-16 10:11

Totally bizarre living here in Phalaborwa - one of the hottest towns in SA. It is cold, raining and windy today.

  • robert.bruce.92505956 - 2013-01-16 10:23

    I'm loving it.

  • Marcel - 2013-01-16 11:13

David Crosthwait, thank you for air-conditioning!!!

  • chuma.mpapela - 2013-01-16 11:13

This is nothing. My venda friend says the heat cpt is facing is equivalent to the coldest winter night in limpopo. He's wearing a jersey and a suit. Not a single sign of sweat or fatigue.

      chuma.mpapela - 2013-01-16 12:26

Lol DuToit. I call him Chuck Norris.

      Lyndatjie - 2013-01-16 13:16

      LMAO at Chuck Norris!

      mushumi - 2013-01-16 13:58

Your "Venda friend" probably doesn't even know where Limpopo is. 40+ coldest winter night in Limpopo?

  • susan.knipejacobs - 2013-01-16 12:32

I can't take the heat!! Want Cape Town's cool weather back!!!

  • candice.potgieter.33 - 2013-01-16 13:37
