Cape Town - Cape Town metro police and traffic authorities arrested 128 people over the weekend, 93 of them for drunk driving, the city said on Monday.

A drunk driver five times over the legal limit was one of the 93, the city's safety and security mayoral committee member JP Smith said in a statement.

Forty-three motorists were arrested at a roadblock in Delft and 19 in Elsies River. They included a pastor and a police officer.

On Sunday, a 52-year-old driver, who was five times over the legal alcohol limit, knocked over a stranded motorist who was refuelling his car on the N2 near the R300 with the help of metro police.

"While the motorist was refuelling his vehicle, the driver of a Mazda came speeding along, hitting the stranded motorist and damaging the metro police patrol vehicle in the process."

The motorist was in a serious condition in hospital. The motorist would face charges of reckless or negligent driving.

The remaining people were arrested on charges including possession of drugs, assault, rape, and defeating the ends of justice.
