Johannesburg - A Soweto pastor who allegedly raped a 12-year-old girl and sexually assaulted two others appeared in the Protea Magistrate's Court on Friday, police said.

The 62-year-old would be back in court on 4 December for his formal bail application, Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said.

The pastor was arrested on Wednesday afternoon. He allegedly raped the 12-year-old girl and sexually assaulted two others, aged 13 and 15.

The 12-year-old told her teachers at school, who alerted the police.

She told her mother when she was raped a month earlier, but the mother did not believe her. The other two girls came forward after the 12-year-old reported the matter. These two girls told the police the man had fondled them.

One of the girls was taken to a place of safety, as she was afraid to go back home after the crime was reported.
