Pathologist: Woman suffocated in freezer

2013-08-02 10:33

Johannesburg - An elderly woman suffocated in a freezer she was forced into during a farm attack, Beeld reported on Friday.

Pathologist Dr Daniel Humphris was reportedly testifying in the Circuit Court in Parys, in the Free State, on Thursday.

According to the newspaper, Ngope Abram Oupa Mokoena, 47, his wife Mmaditaba Francina Mokubung, 46, and Ezekiele Mtshembelele Mguni, 30, have pleaded not guilty to a number of charges related to the attack.

Annatjie van Rooyen, 76, and her husband Ernest van Rooyen, 77, were attacked in their farm tuck shop in Parys in January, Beeld reported. Their bodies were discovered a few days later.

Her hands were tied behind her back with shoelaces and her feet were secured with wire.

Humphris said he had to wait for the body to defrost before he could conduct the autopsy.

Ernest van Rooyen's body was found on the floor of the shop. He and his wife had been stabbed.

The newspaper reported that the court was read a statement Mokoena made the day of his arrest, in which he said he had agreed with "Rasta" [Mguni] to rob the couple because they owed him money for painting work.

"Rasta hit the old white man and he fought back.... The old woman was still alive when he put her in the freezer," he was quoted as telling the court.

This is Mzansi!Where our prez says South Africans are a good nation,With such things hapenning,I totally disagree with him.Its so sad to read such gruesome stories especially on the elderly and defenceless.

      jerhone - 2013-08-02 11:23

the aged and helpless is what they prey on the bloodthirsty parasites, I mean if some one owes you money take them to small claims court, the excuses are pathetic, but THANKS to those green flies sitting in the constipational court barbaric murderers have a right to live and we have a right to be taxed to death keeping these animals alive, they don't realize the longer sentences they give the more and the longer the innocent taxpayer suffers and they are supposed to be learnered men and women

  • Tumisang Zuze - 2013-08-02 10:55

What the hell has happened to South Africa? These people don't deserve to go to jail, they deserve to be killed. My goodness. May the van Rooyens RIP.

  • Matheus Uys - 2013-08-02 11:14

Mark my words - time will come when we will not take this anymore. We must look after our older people, this is plain barbaric behavior. People are getting more angry and fed-up by the day because of this cruelness!!!!!!

  • Donald James Rishworth - 2013-08-02 11:20

Causing someone's death by murder in itself is horrific but, for me, what is so savage and barbaric is the pain and fear inflicted on the innocent victim before death occurs. The cruelty is incomprehnsible. Most of these types of murders are committed by people who are considered perfectly sane so what is it that makes them capable of such cruelty? So sad that the last moments on earth for Ernest and Annatjie were spent in fear and panic. RIP Mr and Mrs Van Rooyen.

GOD shouldn't have created some souls.Do the people who did this have piece of mind?Do they really sleep well at night?I can even hear them telling someone that they love them.Really?????

  • Tanya Bussio-Kemp - 2013-08-02 11:37

IDIOT!! Mokoena, did you think she was going to be ok if you put her in the freezer???

  • Barbara Munster - 2013-08-02 11:53

    NO MERCY!!!!!!

  • Ivan van Heerden - 2013-08-02 11:53

Death Penalty NOW!!!!! We need to mobilize and have this placed on the ballots next year. If the majority of the public wants it it should be legislated, even if for a 5 year period initially. There is no consequence harsh enough to stop these monsters other than a threat to their lives.

  • Louis Van De Venter - 2013-08-02 11:55

I fear for the future of this country. They owed them money for some painting work? So they killed them? SARS owes me some tax money, maybe i should go kill them? Ungovernable!

  • Monique Naude - 2013-08-02 11:58

Regardless of race, religion or area... Our elderly people are targets because they can't fight back. What sick people we share this country with. What makes it even more despicable is the fact that most all of our elderly people struggle to make a living every day. They don't have money. Their investments are never what was promised to them in their younger years. They worked their entire lives for a sickening pittance of probably R2000-00 pension money a month. Yet government pays almost R10 000-00 a month to keep criminals behind bars. I think it is time to change this around, give the criminals the smaller amount and the law abiding citizens the bigger amounts.

Fricken barbarians. How can somebody who is supposed to be 'human' do this to another living person. They are cruel, heartless sub-humans, can't even call them animals as animals do not kill for no reason. The fact that the victims where elderly defenseless folk makes it even more disgusting. There is no punishment that can fit this crime because we would have to stoop to their level of inhumanity to dish it out. It is a huge pity that taxpayers money will be used to look after these 'THINGS' probably for the rest of their lives.

      jerhone - 2013-08-02 13:41

And the saddest thing is those old folk more than likely gave them all that they had without a fight while begging for their lives before the barbaric cruelty started, it must be most peoples nightmare to be buried alive

  • Alta Steyn - 2013-08-02 12:40

Seleko, GOD creates good people. He gave them the gift of free wiil, not to abuse but to use it according to His will. Unfortunately, people turn to greed, and greed has many infectious minions like selfishness, lust, anger, envy and the list goes on - which result in murder. Greed is such an ugly thing. It is such a great pity that some people do not see the evil hiding behind a little emotion called greed. Is has already destroyed so many lives. So sad.

      Matshane Seleko - 2013-08-02 13:09

You couldn't have said it better,Alta.Am glad that there still good and caring people out there.I've learned something positive from your words.Thank you brother/sister.

      jerhone - 2013-08-02 13:53

well it is written the love of money is the root of ALL evil. From the very top (comandrin' thief)down to the poorest peasant, because it will turn people into animals to obtain more than they can use, they will cheat, steal, murder, even their own flesh and blood not because they nessesary need it but just to have more than the next man/woman

  • Ann Du Plessis - 2013-08-02 12:41

    That was so unnecessary..RIP

  • Nyaganyaga Ndawonda - 2013-08-02 12:54

    bottom wisely next time round

  • Buli Bulawayo - 2013-08-02 13:01

This article left me with a very heavy heart. These people are evil. They don't deserve to live how can they kill people like that? this is soo wrong.

  • Michiel Hendrik Jacobus Wood - 2013-08-02 13:09

I think perhaps the real issue is what goes wrong with someone that they can consider doing this to another person. Little chlidren despite their fickleness tend to play nicely with each other, irrespactive of race and economics, older children generally too, some teenagers, but what goes wrong with someone that takes them to this point?

  • Alta Steyn - 2013-08-02 13:46

Thank you, Seleko. And I am happy to see that you care too. A person so often gets shunt nowadays for distinguishing between what is right and wrong. But in the end, we will stand tall, all by God's grace. You have a blessed weekend.
