Patient stabs doctor, guard

2011-06-07 17:00

Mbombela - A doctor stabbed and wounded at Middelburg Hospital in Mpumalanga on Tuesday has died, the provincial health department said.

"It is with regret to report that the doctor has passed away. He died this afternoon at Midmed private hospital, in Middelburg," spokesperson Mpho Gabashane said.

The SA Medical Association (Sama) named him as Senzosenkosi Mkhize.

A 32-year-old patient allegedly stabbed the doctor in the chest, and a security guard who tried to intervene, in the wrist, at about midday. At the time the doctor was working in the out-patient department, where the patient had gone for a follow-up consultation.

The guard was admitted to the same hospital in a stable condition. The doctor was transferred to a nearby private hospital in a critical condition.

The patient fled the scene and was still at large.

Provincial Health MEC Dikeledi Mahlangu was expected to visit the hospital on Wednesday.

Sama called for better safety measures in hospitals to protect doctors.

"Sama makes a strong call for action, not for yet another empty rhetoric and spin-doctoring, in addressing... safety and security in our hospitals," chairperson of public sector doctors Phophi Ramathuba said in a statement.

"How many more doctors must die? How many more must be robbed? And how many more female doctors must be raped before something is done about safety and security in our hospitals?"

It pains me to read news like this. The killer will probably plead insanity and spend a few years in a mental institution at our expense and come a few years later and do the same thing again. Eish I don`t blame people for immigrating Deepest condolences to the family. May he R.I.P

The article fails to mention that the patient WAS a psychiatric patient already.

      CorbZA - 2011-06-07 17:50

@REVO You talk about respect, yet you seem to have none yourself. Private hospitals are damn expensive, and money doesn't make you a better person.

      jbjoe - 2011-06-07 18:09

corbza, there is a difference between not having respect and being fed up with this fuked up state the country is in viva the revolution!

      mhlongoms - 2011-06-07 18:37

@ revo, its a basic human right to have medical care, imagine if ur out on a game drive and u get attacked by a wild animal, and there are no pvt hospitals in sight,u get to a public hospital and there are no doctors.@ barry,i hope dis idiot spends da rst of his miserable life being tortured and abused by other prisoners

My sincere condolences to the doctor and his family. As caring citizens I am pretty sure that most us can concur that our hearts have bled a thousand times this year alone, everything seems to be on a downward spiral, dark and evil events taking place on a daily basis. At times like this when I look for answers I remind myself of the following, "greater is He that is in me than he that is in the world".

      Barry - 2011-06-07 17:51

@ Jayden " our hearts have bled a thousand times this year alone" Eish ......and we are only 6 months into the year. What next are we gonna read about ? Eish

Eish this is just wrong! This doctor could have saved thousand of lives in his lifetime. And now he is gone, all the result of hideous and stupid act. We all hurt severely when crime hit us, but when one of us who has dedicated his/her life to help others is taken away from us by crime the harshness of it all is even more stark. Our citizens deserve protection from acts like these!

et's not put this down to the ills of this country. People with mental illnesses go on the rampage all over the world killing people. eg the Aussie nut who killed an ex south african a few weeks ago in Australia. Don;t put this down as a reason to immigrate people.

  • DaveD - 2011-06-07 17:55

And management tells me I'm not allowed to carry my gun in the hospital? F*** them! A patient pulls a knife on me, I'll shoot him in the head

  • Sbongile - 2011-06-07 18:06

every time there's a crime the law take time to act, whom are you going to rule if you let those to be ruled be killed, can our safety and security act or the community at large will take action stan, emalahleni

Why was the dr stabbed? If for no reason at all the perp is probably mentally deranged - but there may have been a reason - perhaps revenge? Who knows? Perhaps the dr voted DA instead of ANC? Or he may have tried something with the patient or his wife? Anything is possible.

I suggest to the Goverment to do a serious analysis of the root causes of this heinous crimes taking palace in SA , our beautiful country. Some of this acts are way beyong criminality and poverty can no longer be used as excuse. By just reading reports on manner some of this babaric acts are committed, one truly needs to ask the qeustion whether, there is any force beyong evil opareting whithin our communities. Ist no longer about race or colour, all of us must come together and try to find a solution to this savageness, even if it means bringing back the dead penalty, so be it through a referendum. Enough is enough!!!!.

A colleague of mine was robbed by the same patient he stitched up 2hours before. We go to work to help, a very ungrateful set of people, who put us at risk with their diseases... and now we go to work to get killed? eish?

  • Wacko - 2011-06-08 07:19

Doctor at the provincial hospital , why was he sent to the private hospital when the minister says that there is nothing wrong with government hospitals , what a joke this circus we live in....

      Francois - 2011-06-08 15:34

Because the basic rule of thumb is that if you CAN afford to go to a private hospital, you should. The public hospitals are under enough stress as it is.

  • David - 2011-06-08 16:04

We are now technologically capable or taking care of everyone on the planet. No more war/politics/crime/poverty ENOUGH With this system, crime will reduce to 0!

  • SA R.I.P. - 2011-06-09 10:52

Crime will increase by the minute in South africa coz there is to much CORRUPTION in this country, starting from Government, Police, Metro Police etc. They will rather stop a innocent driver for not indicating on the road, beat them up and then say they were not involved. Same with police they are here to protect us not to steal from us, where they can make money these days they take bribes same with Metro Police, they get salaries from companies to keep their rotten vehicles on the road, we as South African TAX PAYERS have to see how the government spent our money that we worked DAMN HARD for to have Parties of Bilions of rands, accomodate their families in mansions, fly all over the world on holidays at the most expensive resorts, and we don't have a DAMN SAY. yet they still want us to vote for a Party which promise the sun and moon and all you get is a "TAKE A NUMBER AND WAIT IN THE QUEUE" Where is the DEATH PENALTY,they will never bring back the death penalty as they know it will happen daily, OUR TAX Money must pay for the criminals to have a JOL in jail, escape and do some more CRIME. our kids are not safe anymore at school as there are dangerous weapons and drugs all over in the schools, Teachers is also not there to teach anymore but to humiliate and intimidate our kids, The government have BILIONS to spent in the budget for Safety and Security,Maintance but they will rather SAVE it for a rainy day when Someone needs a New SPORTS CAR, or a MANSION GOOD BYE SA R.I.P
