Pietermaritzburg - A man died after being hit by a vehicle on the R56 near Pietermaritzburg on Saturday morning, paramedics said.

"Reports indicate that the 25-year-old man was trying to cross the road when a vehicle smashed into him before leaving the scene," Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said.

Paramedics arrived at the scene and found the man in the roadway in a critical condition.

"Medics worked ardently for more than an hour to resuscitate the man but he tragically died on scene due to the extensive injuries that he had sustained," Botha said.

The accident would be investigated by police.

I don't know the facts but so often pedestrians walk across highways, walk in road, sleep in roads that it is amazing more are not killed.
