Johannesburg - A man was dismembered and killed when he was hit by a bakkie on the N12 outside Fochville, Gauteng, on Friday night, paramedics said.

"ER24 paramedics, along with other services, responded to scene, and on arrival found the bakkie parked on the side of the road," ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said.

"The entire front section of the vehicle had been crushed upon impact."

On inspection, paramedics found the dismembered body of the pedestrian, believed to be in his 30s, 500m away from the bakkie.

"Unfortunately nothing could be done for the patient and he was declared dead on scene."

The driver of the bakkie sustained only minor injuries and was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital for further assessment.

"It is understood that the driver of the bakkie failed to notice the pedestrian crossing the dark road," Meiring said.

"Local authorities were on scene for further investigations."
