Mbombela - A pedestrian was killed and over 90 people, including schoolchildren, were injured when a bus and a truck collided outside Mbombela on Wednesday morning, officials said.

Mpumalanga community safety spokesperson Moeti Mmusi said 84 people were slightly injured and eight were seriously injured.

"They were rushed to a nearby hospital in Nelspruit," he said.

"Most of the passengers on the bus were children going to school."

He did not know their ages.

Paramedics said the accident happened at the Karino four-way interchange about 20 kilometres from Mbombela.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Santi Steinmann said one person was airlifted to hospital.

"Reports from the scene indicate that the heavy goods vehicle knocked over a pedestrian who tragically lost a life and the bus left the roadway and came to a standstill in a ditch on the side of the road."
