Johannesburg - An elderly man was killed when he was hit by a car on Lurie Road in Putfontein, Benoni, on Saturday evening, paramedics said.

"The road is narrow and steep on one side running around the back of Daveyton, and this may have contributed to the cause of the accident," ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson said.

The man died before paramedics arrived on the scene

The two occupants of the sedan were uninjured.

Police would investigate further, Jackson said.

Seker so dronk soos 'n tor gewees. I use that road quite often. Just luck that there are not more fatalities on weekends. People get drunk and don't know where they are, swaying and walking onto the road.

hollow words from our esteemed authorities to reduce the pedestrian death toll. For some inexplicacable reason I daily see masses of students proceding to anf from colleges in our town, walking in the middle of the road rather than using the sidewalks (pavements),music blaring from cell phones, without a care in the world.Vehicles have to actually weave throughy the masses and when one is taken out, the huge outcry ensues.Small wonder that they make up nearly 50% of the annual road deaths.I have once to see passing police patrols or traffic vehicles, when seen in town, actually do anything about it.So...the roadkill will continue unabated unless words are translated into deeds.Fat chance of this happening.
