People gather for miniskirt march

2012-02-17 15:36

Johannesburg - Bree Street taxi rank in Johannesburg's CBD was bustling with people gathering for a march organised by the ANC Women's League on Friday.

At the start of the march, at least 300 people gathered, waving ANC banners.

Women and several men wore miniskirts in bright colours and sang "the leadership is greeting" and "miniskirt we love you".

The march was to protest against the harassment experienced by two young women when they went shopping at the Noord Street taxi rank in December.

The women have been identified only as Zama and Nomthandazo because of the nature of their harassment.

Nomthandazo had worn a black miniskirt and Zama a black top with white bra straps showing.

A group of men taunted them about their clothes while groping them, pulling at their clothing, and taking photos with their cellphones.

The march was intended to emphasise that women had the right to wear what they wished and should not be demeaned or victimised over their choice of clothes.

The women's league was joined by Cosatu and Women and Men Against Child Abuse for the march. The Commission for Gender Equality also pledged their support for the sexual harassment awareness event.

      Nitro - 2012-02-17 15:41

Agree 100% but instead they march for crap like this

      Shirley - 2012-02-17 15:43

      To them not as important!

      Grimmister - 2012-02-17 15:47

@ Nitro..."crap like this"....Don't you think that the rape and murder of women on farms is part of what they are marching against. Your comment is just plain insensitive.

      nokuthandwa - 2012-02-17 15:50

wow Nitro, so sexual harassment is crap to you!

      Willie - 2012-02-17 15:52

Why don't you join and highlight this.Stop been an arm chair critic be active

      Whitty - 2012-02-17 15:53

Why farmers relatives like yourself do like wise? Where is that binne-broek of mine?

      sicelon - 2012-02-17 15:56

Why don't you go march for farm murders if you feel so strongly about it....

      msendi - 2012-02-17 15:57

Why don't you organise a march against white murderers? What is wrong with some racists who spend the whole day in this site undermining other people. Those people have a valid reason to attend that march. It is also their right…

      Stan - 2012-02-17 16:01

I wouldn't march against farm murders... I am not a farmer.

      jamesrwicks - 2012-02-17 16:34

Who wants to bet Nitro is a farmer?

      jerry.kb - 2012-02-18 07:28

that is a tricky one...till now, some people pretend it doesn't happen. someone should come out soon

  • Peter - 2012-02-17 15:47

      E=MC2 - 2012-02-17 16:04

@Elle-Black - a mini skirt is a mini skirt... if you wear one, you're looking for a certain type of attention from a certain type of male. full stop

      cselemela - 2012-02-17 16:09

what is appropriate to you? long skirts? Its people like you that makes them to march

      Richard - 2012-02-17 16:39

Personally i'd like to walk around naked, would that mean i was asking to be raped?

      Moipone Gillian Motshego - 2012-02-17 17:57

  • sbonelo.s.ngwenya - 2012-02-17 16:08

WHY WAS I NOT INFORMED OF THIS?I COULD HAVE TAKEN LEAVE TO ATTEND MAAN LOL!!!!And no one has the right to touch what doesnt belong to can look at the menue but it doesnt necessarily mean you can force an order.

  • E=MC2 - 2012-02-17 16:10

Hoping to accomplish what exactly? Wear a mini-skirt & you're looking for THAT kind of attention from THAT kind of guy.

  • Mandy Stevenson - 2012-02-17 16:35

People have the right to dress how they please (within reason) without fear of harassment, rape or an other abuse. We don't have to like what people wear but we have no right to abuse them. I bet if a pretty blonde poppie walked around dressed like that you guys would be ogling her out and being most appreciating.

  • Irene - 2012-02-17 16:39

If you dress like a slut, don't be surprised when you're treated like one.

      Shannon - 2012-02-17 17:27

Sies Irene. We women are allowed to dress however we like, that is not an excuse for sexual harassment! And since when is a mini skirt sluttish. Jees.... are you from the middle ages or something?

      Cyrus - 2012-02-17 20:36

If u wear a mini skirt you will be looked at in a sexual manner. thats a fact

      tseabelo - 2012-12-24 14:02

Guess if you think like a slut Irene, that makes YOU one.

  • Richard - 2012-02-17 16:41

I'd love to just be in my birthday suit, it's the most comfortable. Society won't accept it so we dress in whatever else feels comfortable, if these ladies feel comfortable like this then good for them. Those who judge and hate because they are insecure must get over it.

so tlu took to the world courts to bring genocide of the afrikaner nation to theyre attention, the afrikaner nation was put on genocide whatch and are already on level five being moved up to six. at level 8 it is full blown genocide like nazi germany. but like the anc said "farm murders is not a priority it is a mere concern" while inciting hatred towards the afrikaans nation and farmers. but they march for to woman who wore to little clothing lmfao!

      msendi - 2012-02-17 17:14

Organise Afrikaners and march against Afrikaner genocide, if there is any genocide. You have a right to do so. Don't wait for other people to march on your behalf… STAND UP!!! STAAN OP!!!

      Shannon - 2012-02-17 17:29

      1. What has farm murders got to do with a march against sexual harassment of women? 2. A farmer is a person who farms. How is the killing of a person of a particular profession genocide? Weak logic!

      lindz.kok - 2012-02-17 18:35

look read my comment carefully... i said there are very real isues here in south africa, but they see it fit to organise this huge march because of two people that dressed inapropriately. wile children are being raped and killed. an entire nation is being wiped out, witch the world are taking steps against but intead of taking on these very real isues they are organising a march to gain votes im sure. so you are more than welcome to call my logic weak but these are the facts. and msedi what do you prepose we do 2000 000 afrikaners take up weapons? we did stand up against the genocide by taking the isue to the world courts! damn some people... so sumerised i said, the anc are avoiding the real isues by taking up silly little marches.

whats the hell on our eyes. These womens they have 2 go back to CRESHE they can learn 4rm there coz they have to act as motherz, Not kids

  • Masilo Mangena - 2012-02-17 18:18

Guys remember this is south africa we all have rights so every 1 has a right to what ever they want to do or dress they way they want to dress take white people they wear anything they want To wear so y bother black people when their dressed the way they want to some people needs to grow up

  • linda.stroebel - 2012-02-17 18:31

Since when does this have anything to do with farm murders and racisdm???!!! Honestly?!!! These people are standing up for their rights, and you typically criticize them! I am white, but I am ashamed to be associated to you as a fellow white woman! Since when does a miniskirt justify sexual abuse?!!! At least they are doing something about the attitude people have about women, instead of posting idiotic narrow-minded comments about something that is absolutely irrelevant. No wonder black keep bringing up the racial issue! Now get with the programme! We are women against abuse! That's it!!!! Do you think farmers are the only people being murdered? Do you honestly think that your expensive alarm system, your burgar bars and security complex is LESS safe than a shack with a wired fence???!!! Do you really think that blacks are not being affected by crime??!! Farm murders are horrible, but don't forget that women and children (and men) in townships are also being raped and murdered. It has nothing to do with race, it's all of us; black, white, Indian etc. Against criminals! So get that right, and maybe we can start wasting our time on idiotic racial childishness, and start fighting real crimes. Child rape is very common in SA, this is a wonderful way to fight sexual crimes. You have a voice ladies, use it!!! And stop making narrow minded comments about people who stand for something and DO SOMETHING!!!

  • Zinclair Mkhonza - 2012-02-17 18:37

wearing what u feel comfortable with doesnt make you a kid it doesnt mean you need to be harrassed. those fools who cant just look with their eyes are just the same as rapist

  • Wendy - 2012-02-17 18:38

Personally, i got no problems what a women decides to wear, but she shouldnt complain when she attracts the wrong attention due to her dress code. Lets take a scientific research. A pretty women walks pass wearing long dress and generally well covered , u look and admire her beauty. A pretty women walks pass with a mini skirt and skimpy cloths and u start to undress her with your eyes. thats a fact

  • Tshiamo - 2012-02-28 17:26

The Miniskirt fest in other words?
