Johannesburg - More research is needed to explain why vehicles sometimes catch fire in crashes, Transport Minister Dipuo Peters said on Sunday.

"Organisations with research capacity and relevant expertise such as the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research; and experts in the motor-manufacturing and petroleum industries should look into incidents wherein vehicles burn on impact," she said in a statement.

Peters pointed to an accident on the N2 near the Dokodweni toll gate in KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday. Seven people were killed and both vehicles caught fire.

She urged motorists to be extra cautious and vigilant over the festive season and in rainy conditions.

"Persistent rains result in slippery and damaged roads, leading to difficulties in driving. Therefore those entrusted with the critical responsibility of driving cannot afford to take their eyes off the ball."
