Phiyega's behaviour is inappropriate - DA

2012-10-24 14:25

Johannesburg - National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega's reported behaviour at the Farlam Commission was inappropriate and insensitive, the DA said on Wednesday.

"This is not the first time Phiyega has shown utter disrespect for the families of those miners who were killed at Marikana," Democratic Alliance MP Dianne Kohler Barnard said in a statement.

"Shortly after the massacre, she commented at the funeral of one of the police officers killed at Marikana that the police 'should not feel sorry for their actions'."

The Times reported on Wednesday that Phiyega laughed and joked while footage of the killing of 34 miners in a clash with police was being screened at a commission hearing at the Rustenburg Civic centre.

Phiyega reportedly joked with a state law adviser while a prelude to the killings was being screened.

Surrounded by senior officers, Phiyega smiled as she watched.

Screams of horror

It was only when screams of horror echoed across the room, as footage of the actual shooting was played without warning, that Phiyega's "humorous demeanour changed to that of an ice queen, blatantly ignoring the wailing families", according to the report.

Kohler Barnard said the DA would write to Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa on Wednesday asking that he tell Phiyega to make a public apology.

"This is not the behaviour one would expect from a public representative at a time which requires the utmost sensitivity and empathy for all who lost loved ones during that time," she said.

On 16 August police opened fire on a group of striking miners encamped on a hill in Nkaneng, killing 34 and wounding 78. The workers wanted monthly salaries of R12 500.

Which "ones" Semontenate - the DA? As South Africans, why should they shut up, or can only the ANC speak out?

      art5SA - 2012-10-24 20:48

Does one need anymore proof that the ANC's motto is "F*CK THE POOR"??? They don't give a RATS AR5E about the poor... After all... they are the COUNTRY'S ELITE.... walk / drive around like ROYALTY!

  • Andrea - 2012-10-24 14:36

I've said it before and I'm saying it again, she has no business in that position. If our Govt. really wants to bring these violent uprisings to an end, they should consider filling a few positions within SAPS with ranked officers from pre-1994, bring back the skills and knowledge so that all of us can enjoy a safer existence.

      themba.mkhize.5494 - 2012-10-24 15:07

      patrick.mampane - 2012-10-24 15:38

You mean the likes of Gidione Niewoudt, Eugene De kock etc? They were more skilled in making people disappear than anything else. So they must now be hauled out of their cells, re-armed and let loose on to the masses? No my friend show some sense please. It's like demanding that Himler and Goering be assigned to law enforcement duties.

I think I must start a blog so that we can all vent our anger and racist slurs there. Get it all "off our chests" and out of our minds; maybe just maybe we would be able to "work" together. A blog where the list of "NO SAY WORDS" are aloud. JIssiss, I'm getting sick and tired of this K*K now.

      clive.kihn - 2012-10-24 17:36

And, Ikinga, most of us want nothing to do with today's force of corrupt, incompetent and lazy ANC deployees who make up much of SAPS. With apologies to those few cops of all races who do their jobs properly and can hold their heads high. The SAPS is perhaps the pre-eminent example of AA gone totally wrong.

      clive.kihn - 2012-10-24 17:49

I have to agree with Thando and Katleho: there is nothing to suggest the woman is either corrupt or retarded. However, when Zuma offerd her the post, she should have had the grace and intelligence to turn it down, knowing she would be drinking from a poisoned chalice. But perhaps the lure of the gravy train was too strong. She will fail like the two political appointees before her. We need an experienced, competent career cop with strong leadership qualities if crime is not finally going to bring this country to its knees.

The DA are showing their ultra-leftist side again. We really do need a new, strong and no-nonsense political party that's capable of taking on the ANC. I'm tired of voting DA but what other option do I have? It's either useless ANC, parties that have no hope in hell of putting pressure on the ANC or slobbering Liberal DA that do get stuff done but their heads are in the wrong place. Why should Phiyega apologise when the police did nothing wrong?

I do not say that the police acted correctly, BUT the so-called 'victims' were a bunch of lawless, murderous thugs who have demonstrated their willingness to murder police and whoever else stood in their way. They are what they are – murderers and lawless thugs and should not be turned into martyrs.

our brothers were butchered at the behest of the private mine owners...can the world see that

      tasmee.hylkema - 2012-10-24 18:28

uhmmmm, what about the policemen and security guards that were first killed by the miners? Look forward to your response. This is actually what the world saw, barbarians charging the police with weapons, they also watched in horror and disbelief at how innocent people were killed by violent protesters. What the world sees and what you see are 2 very different things, the world can be objective.

      bongani.nsele.58 - 2012-10-24 18:48

i still say all human life lost at Marikana was at the behest of private mine owners sitting nicely at their food filled tables in London New York...i also note your tone, words like barbarians, warlords are never used when it is in europe but you are comfortable labeling our brothers fighting a just course for their livelyhood....

      tasmee.hylkema - 2012-10-26 00:29

No i dont regard arming oneself with lethal weapons, premeditating an act of violence, a just cause. I agree that no life should be lost, but this behaviour is unacceptable in any society, therefore people who choose to resolve issues through violence and intimidation, at the cost of innocent lives being taken, will be labelled as they behave.

I'm not sure if the DA is trying to lose voters, but they need to get their facts straight before commenting. From the report: "...when screams of horror echoed across the room, as footage of the actual shooting was played without warning, that Phiyega's humorous demeanour changed to that of an ice queen". She was NOT laughing during the screening of the shooting as N24 reports keep implying. Give the woman a break.

      Spearshaker@Inkandla - 2012-10-24 17:54

Read the full report and you'll see what we are talking about. She was laughing and joking before and during the screening up to the point when the 'screams of horror' filled thee room and the judge had to stop the proceedings till later.
