Durban - Six men who escaped from the Phoenix Magistrate’s Court on Monday have been rearrested.

Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said the prisoners escaped from the courthouse complex while they were being put into a truck.

“The prisoners escaped from the Phoenix Magistrate's Court while they were being loaded into a truck that was transporting them to Westville Prison for detention. It is alleged that they kicked the truck door open and escaped from the court premises,” he said.

Police officers gave chase and immediately rearrested four prisoner and on Tuesday morning nabbed the other two, said Naicker.
“They will be charged with escaping from lawful custody and will all appear in court soon. Prior to their escape, they were arrested for minor offences such as possession of dagga and theft,” he said.
