Durban - The trial of businesswoman Shauwn Mpisane was delayed in the Durban Regional Court on Tuesday because she was avoiding photographers.

Magistrate Blessing Msane had to adjourn proceedings because Mpisane did not want to enter the court room when asked to by the State.

Mabongi Flora-Junior "Shauwn" Mpisane is accused of inflating invoices by more than R5m to cut her tax bill.

Mpisane is also accused of violating the Close Corporations Act by remaining the sole member of Zikhulise Cleaning, Maintenance and Transport CC when she had a previous conviction of fraud.

Other charges

She was also facing charges of corruption and defeating the ends of justice.

She has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Photographers were verbally attacked and threatened by Mpisane's bodyguards.

Family and friends who attended the trial expressed their unhappiness to journalists, saying they were violating Mpisane's rights.

Msane told the media they could not take pictures after he entered the court room. He said the use of cameras in court was interrupting the progress of the trial.

On Monday State advocate Meera Naidu made an application to join the corruption and defeating the ends of justice charges with the fraud charges Mpisane is already facing.

She was also accused of contacting one of the witnesses expected to testify in her fraud trial.

According to the Independent on Saturday, she handed herself in at the Mayville police station at 09:30 on Friday, after the police warned her of her pending arrest.

She appeared in the Pinetown Magistrate's Court on Friday and was released on R50 000 bail.

Mpisane should consider the rights of the rest of SA that she has potentially violated. I don't get why she was not dragged into the Court Room. Surely if summoned to enter the Court one cannot refuse. That's contempt.

Why is she not in jail? How can the magistrate adjourn because this accused, an already convicted criminal, doesn't want her pic in the paper? We often read about criminal cases dragging on and on, how is this acceptable?

Money talks! And if i am wrong prove it. The magistrate adjourned out of the goodness of his heart - yeah right!

The next think is for her to tell (not ask) the Judge to make her some coffee.

The arrogance of these people absolutely amazes me. They definitely have more rights and get away with it.
