Durban - The lawyer for the driver of an articulated lorry which killed 23 people when its brakes failed has withdrawn from the case.

Theasen Pillay, who was appointed by Sanele Goodness May's employer Sagekal Logistics to defend him, told the Pinetown Regional Court on Monday that he was withdrawing from the case.

He said three other attorneys had arrived at court to defend May.

The accident occurred when the articulated truck May was driving hit four fully-laden minibus taxis and a Volkswagen Golf on the corners of Field's Hill (M13) and Richmond roads in Pinetown shortly before 19:00 on 6 September.

He was initially charged with 22 case of culpable homicide, but this was subsequently upgraded to 22 cases of murder and a charge of reckless or negligent driving.

A 23rd person injured in the crash died on Saturday.

It was not immediately clear who would represent May and the matter was adjourned to later in the day.

May is also expected back in court on Wednesday, when his formal bail application is expected to be heard.
