Johannesburg - "The skin is here. You can take her to theatre," Netcare's  Mandee Toubkin told Pippie Kruger's surgeon at the Garden City Clinic in Johannesburg just before specially-grown skin arrived at the Arwyp Medical Centre, a short distance from OR Tambo International Airport.

The Lephalale toddler, who turned three last week, has been in hospital since New Year's Eve when she sustained third degree burns to 80% of her body at a braai.

Pippie is undergoing groundbreaking surgery to graft 41 pieces skin, specially grown in the US.

Beeld's Pauli van Wyk said on Monday night it had taken the medical courier who'd brought the skin from Boston on an 18-hour flight, Sonny Mysteri, less than five minutes to get off the plane and through customs.

Despite peak-hour traffic, the skin was at Garden City about half-an-hour later.

The operation, which has been underway for more than two hours, is said to be "going well".

Lynda, do you even KNOW the story behind Pippie's burns? Do you know how it happened? Insensitive, uninformed and IGNORANT comment.
