Pistorius case postponed until August

2013-06-04 09:25

Pretoria - The case against murder accused paralympian Oscar Pistorius was postponed to 19 August 19 the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

"Mr Pistorius the matter against you has been postponed for further investigation," said Acting Magistrate Daniel Thulare.

The same amended bail conditions will apply.

The pre-trial hearing got under way at 09:00 on Tuesday.

Pistorius stood up as the magistrate entered.

Further investigation

Prosecutor Andrea Johnson began by requesting a postponement.

"The request for the postponement is based on the State needing more time for further investigation," she submitted.

Further details of the postponement would not be discussed, as agreed by both parties.

Pistorius's counsel Barry Roux stood up and confirmed this.

"On that day [August 19] it won't be only to report back," he said.

"We have agreed to postpone for further investigation," said Roux.

He asked the magistrate to keep the day open to deal with any pre-trail applications.

Pistorius was charged with premeditated murder after Reeva Steenkamp was shot dead in his Pretoria home on 14 February.

During a bail hearing in February, Pistorius's defence read out a statement in which he said he thought Steenkamp was an intruder.

He was released on bail on 22 February, but under conditions which he later challenged in the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria. Several of the conditions were relaxed, including bans on international travel and alcohol consumption.

"Prosecutor Andrea Johnson began by requesting a postponement. "The request for the postponement is based on the State needing more time for further investigation," she submitted. You will find that actually reading and getting the facts will prevent you from sounding like a ignorant fool

      Mike Bundy - 2013-06-04 11:55

I predict that this case will be postponed again and again and then dismissed on a technicality.

  • Deon K. Alexander - 2013-06-04 09:30

Oscar is guilty without a trial according to the media...Freedom is coming with the next sun set...

      Zeepolar - 2013-06-04 09:50

deon, the media finds everyone guilty without trial and on certain occassions you have treated other people like that. now u want oscar to be an exception? chill.

      Andrew M - 2013-06-04 10:02

How come all the hype and sensationalism, just for one murder trial, when we about 10 or more on a weekly basis, some include rape? Has this man been found guilty before his Trial?

      Nurse Helenk - 2013-06-04 10:12

I wonder how they are going to try and stop the world's media from running stories? They might be able to stop local papers but Time Magazine already ran a cover story and SKY leaked the pictures of the crimescene.

  • Stoute Babuseng - 2013-06-04 09:30

This guy is never gonna go jail, I already made peace with it. Our justice system is a mockery

  • Zeepolar - 2013-06-04 09:31

here it goes. it will be postponed 5 more times and then he will walk. *yawn* justice delayed is justice denied. RIP Reeeva.

  • David Ward - 2013-06-04 09:32

Get ready for a few sympathetic 'leaks' from the family that will magically cast a different light on the case. What's the reason for the delay? NPA caught sleeping for months?

  • Faith Keabetswe Leburu - 2013-06-04 09:34

Enjoy your last free roaming days Oscar, the truth will be grilled out of you!

      Mike Bundy - 2013-06-04 11:57

No, they have relaxed the alcohol ruling so he can just rest and have a dop and enjoy spending his millions.

  • Joseph Liebenberg - 2013-06-04 09:41

I don't like to comment but I feel some perspective needs to be brought to the above comments. This case is complex. It would be impossible to run a trial after a few short months - for either the SAPS, NPA or Oscar's team. Further, there is court procedure to be followed. Please accept that this trial is more than likely not going to proceed until at least a year / 18 months from now. In addition to investigations and postponements in the Magistrates' Court, it must still be transferred to the High Court, a trial date allocated, and and and... Further, you have been misled by the media at large who keep on referring to Oscar returning to trial today. It was never the case that this matter was going to proceed to trial today. I take it as a good thing that all of you are at least not au fait with court procedure! Haha...

      AlexMarshall - 2013-06-04 10:09

Finally! some sense Don't you know, everyone is an expert on judicial process because they grew up watching LA LAW.

      Johan Holtzhausen - 2013-06-04 10:17

Chill guys! I think the general sentiment is just that the ordinary un-educated people like the rest of us, expects a speedy trial, it is after all guaranteed in the constitution. And further more, anyone that thinks this case will be dealt with exactly like any other ordinary person who did the same, but without money or fame, is naive.

  • Jack Tig - 2013-06-04 09:41

Thats not news!!! Our Justice system has been an embarrasment lately, so this case will be predicterble from start to finish.

  • Sthembiso Jali - 2013-06-04 09:44

and the media says he will face an uphill battle, lol is this what they were refering to? five minutes in court ? aih man lets get real, this guy will never see a jail cell again, at least not with this case.

  • Dagga Movement - 2013-06-04 09:44

This is wrong! Dagga users are punished severly compared to murderers and rapists! NO MORE! Dagga is legal to those who know about The One People and freeman law. Tax and money is null

  • Francois Hugo - 2013-06-04 09:58

The justice systemin this country is not worth anything!!! Just because he is 'Oscar' does not change anything to what he did!!! He deserves to rot in jail like any other criminal!!!

  • Mat Vee - 2013-06-04 09:59

Sad to think this man might go free because of a dysfunctional justice system...

  • Louise Barnard - 2013-06-04 10:09

thats good news, more precious time for the defence to work on his case! Stay strong Oscar, rooting for a favourable outcome for you!

      Nurse Helenk - 2013-06-04 10:17

It was actually the State and the Defence that requested more time, as was expected before today. What seems a bit insensitive to me is that the date for postponement would have been Reeva's 30th birthday.

      Louise Barnard - 2013-06-04 10:30

Yes the date is insensitive to her family and especially for Oscar!

      Gerald Beer - 2013-06-04 10:58

I wonder what your view would be if it was your daughter or your sister?

  • Ningi 'Ingz' Xulu - 2013-06-04 10:17

The honest truth is we all don't know what went down that morning. And just because we have an opinion on it does not mean its correct. The state believes they have a case so wait and see. And if he is found to be innocent by the state yet he is guilty, guess what, he is not invincible so he will answer to it one day. ?

      Derick Vorster - 2013-06-05 08:41

      stop being an idiot.

  • SailorDave - 2013-06-04 10:20

Many high profile murder cases have dragged out for years. Prepare for many months of postponements. This guy is deep in the dang. If he gets himself out of this one.. I fail to comprehend the outcry

  • Israel - 2013-06-04 11:38

I do not understand why this case has been postponed? - 4 month is long enough to gather evidence!! - i will not be surprised that more postponements will follow

  • Bothie Shava - 2013-06-04 11:47

who cares even if then can postpone it to August 2020,we all know how our judiciary system works. I can assure you that at the end all charges are going to be dropped.

  • Jacqueline Jonker - 2013-06-04 12:09

    Not guilty till proven guilty...

      Nurse Helenk - 2013-06-04 12:17

Yes, please go onto all the other murder stories on news24 and make that same comment. I am sick of people reminding us of "innocent until proven guilty" in this case ONLY.

      Derick Vorster - 2013-06-05 08:42

Idiot comments like this should be removed. wtf seriously

  • Maleho Mothabeng - 2013-06-04 12:11

Really where some of you expecting a guilty verdict today??? Be real there hasn't been a trail date set yet, no indictment served yet - considering the nature of the charge pre meditated murder yes 4months is a not enough time to investigate - if its justice for Reeva you want then sit down and wait till due processes take course even if it takes 4yrs for that to happen

      Derick Vorster - 2013-06-05 08:43

      were* trial* *stfu plz

  • Richard Sloman - 2013-06-04 12:14

Can someone at news24 please learn to write, and someone else learn to read copy: "...was postponed to 19 August 19 the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on Tuesday." WTF...

      Nurse Helenk - 2013-06-04 12:24

There are so many stories today, the poor typist's fingers must be sore. Mistakes happen when you overextend yourself :)

  • Livvi Krige - 2013-06-04 13:27

Hardly surprising!! Brings to mind the song from Caberet - Money makes the world go round!! Forgive me if I am not oozing sympathy for this guy but if you are feeling threatened by an intruder, does it take four shots through a closed door. I have the utmost respect for Oscar as a sportsman, but to expect anyone to believe that you can't notice that your girlfriend is not in bed next to you is a bit much. So media people, book your seats now for the 15 minute show on 19 August before another postponement. They will sell out faster than Justin Bieber tickets.

  • SikRaletive - 2013-06-05 08:02

    Further INVESTIGATION.??
