Pistorius family loves guns - report

2013-03-02 16:02

Johannesburg - The Pistorius family owns 55 firearms, reported Beeld on Saturday.

Oscar Pistorius's father, three uncles and grandfather own 55 firearms between the five of them, reported the Afrikaans daily.

His father, Henke, has four firearms registered in his name, his grandfather, Hendrik, has ten firearms in his name, his uncle, Arnold, also owns ten firearms.

Another uncle, Theo, who is a hunter, owns 17 firearms, and a third uncle, Leo, owns 14.

      ReneMuller.XOXO - 2013-03-02 16:21

Thank you Gunner!! And I own 16 Butcher knives, 24 steak knives, 24 fish knives - so bloody what!!!!!

      andre.vandeventer.16 - 2013-03-02 16:42

So what, they are all licensed, and you can only one gun at a time! Rather look at the unlicensed assault rifles and other arms the thugs own.

      Carl Freeman - 2013-03-02 16:51

Yes Renee but there is no coincidence of one of your children killing a peaceful woman in the middle of the night. Now is there. The way you are going on I could swear OJ was not in the house and that someone else did it. Or should take the blame for him??????

      arthur.salvado - 2013-03-02 16:58

I know guys you must be loyal but 55 guns seems an obsession yet does not make him a murderer. Strange though .

      ReneMuller.XOXO - 2013-03-02 17:09

@Carl, are we talking about the severe invasion of privacy of the Pistorius family or are you referring to OP's trial that is yet to come where the outcome is yet to be determined? I thought so! No need to reply!

      Charles-Bronson Bronson - 2013-03-02 17:39

Agree, this is becoming BORING!!! News 24

      squeegee.pilot - 2013-03-02 17:53

Arthur - read the article. Oscar does not own 55 firearms. This is his family... several of them.

      Ettienne Pel - 2013-03-02 18:02

Does news24 not have anything better than to report about his family? What the hell does the fact that his family owns guns, have to do with us. Do you, news24 want to investigate everyone who has firearms? You will be surprised there are many other people in this country with even more than what they own. You are completely childish in my opinion. Move on to something else, and once the case continues, update us again. We are not interested in what his family did or did not do.

      Stacey Botha - 2013-03-02 19:35

I own a gun. But I also know how and when to use it. You need to be careful with a firearm, it is a deadly weapon. People need to realise this when they buy a gun. There are rules and laws and if you don't follow those you will find yourself in trouble quickly.

      amanda.vandenberg.758 - 2013-03-03 07:50

      fourhundredkg.bobbejaan - 2013-03-03 11:26

How the heck did the press get hold of this information? Does this mean that private firearm licensing information is freely accessible to the public? Are only the criminals with unlicensed firearms entitled to privacy? Good grief, are all the criminals entitled to know who owns firearms so that they can be targeted for theft and robbery?

      Gerhard Van Onselen - 2013-03-03 16:30

Thanks to Beeld and News24, all the criminals in SA now know what guns they have. This seems like a severe invasion of privacy and an endangerment of the Pistorius Family by the media. Where did the media obtain the information from?

      Carl Freeman - 2013-03-03 23:52

This is a murder charge, OP should have thought about the consequences he hand his family would suffer before pulling the trigger on one of the 55 guns. This is a high priority claim and no they deserve little privacy at all. Think before you act!

      Carl Freeman - 2013-03-03 23:55

Gerard don't worry I can assure you no criminal would dare step near any of the Pistorius' properties they surely know they would not be at luxury of having the option of a warning shot. Actually sorry they would but it would be right between the eyes then a warning shot.

      Mattewis Kat - 2013-03-04 07:40

@Rika, so because it is on a d-base somewhere, it is OK to publish it. OK then! Next we will get N24 to publish people's income, their HIV status because its on a 'databasis' - really???

      Nurse Helenk - 2013-03-02 16:40

Thank you Rika. Someone is on the ball.

      Nurse Helenk - 2013-03-02 16:44

Rene you are showing your idiocy with that comment. Disclosing details of a LICENCED firearm is not the same as disclosing a person's HIV status which by the way Rene, is PROTECTED by law. And just so you may know, there is no database of people HIV positive in this country. It is a disease, not a weapon.

No wonder why their kid(oscar) is a murder....hayi it shud be illegal to own more 1 gun....

      stef.swanepoel.5 - 2013-03-02 16:51

Don't comment on the topic of legal and responsible firearm ownership which you clearly know very little about. The notion that all firearm lovers are killers and reckless people is something cooked up by ignorant persons and anti-gun lobbyists. If a person really wants to kill another human being, there's 100s of ways to do it. I'd be very interested to know how many .375 H&Hs or for that matter any hunting rifle has been used in violent crimes in the past 20 years.

  • valkerie.koekemoer - 2013-03-02 16:25

I'd get worried if all the weapons were unlicensed... My father also has guns, he's a collector, and a few firearms are family heirlooms. So thanks, N24, for balanced reporting and bringing the facts into perspective for us all. |NOT|

  • faith.less.712 - 2013-03-02 16:25

I think many of you are forgetting that this freak shot through a closed door 4 times murdering his girlfriend. No warning shot - no nothing. That is not normal behavior hence is rarity. Accident perhaps - but that does not excuse the deed - adult in control of their emotions would never act like this. I have been in a similar situation with robbers and did not discharge my weapon. The law is clear on when you are permitted to discharge your firearm and Oscars situation did not warrant such behavior.

      valkerie.koekemoer - 2013-03-02 16:34

faith.less.712: I agree with the issue of the 4 shots fired, but this would've happened whether Oscar had 1 gun or 10. It's illogical to suggest that the amount of guns I own (legally) directly influences my propensity for shooting people four times through a closed bathroom door. This is sensationalist reporting, finish and klaar.

      John Smith - 2013-03-02 16:36

The only time the assailant must know one is armed is when the bullet hits him. If one's life is in imminent danger one has no time for warning shots!

      stef.swanepoel.5 - 2013-03-02 16:41

I don't think anyone can forget what Oscar Pistorius did after all the news coverage it received. But this article is not about Oscar Pistorius' actions that tragically left a person dead, it rather attempts to demonize legal firearm ownership and invades the privacy of private individuals.

      John Smith - 2013-03-02 16:52

Oscar had a moment of insanity and stupidly did not wait for his assailant to identify himself. For all we know he may have been terrified. Calling him a freak is not okay.

      Prada Ledger - 2013-03-02 17:14

please elaborate on why you are calling Oscar a freak?

      Elmaré Koekemoer - 2013-03-02 17:19

Freak? Tuts on u for name calling. Im sure by the time u shot u warning shot u be dead. Then where exactly are u going to shoot it to as bullets travil. U might kill a lil girl 2km away on there toilet if u shoot up into the air.

      faith.less.712 - 2013-03-03 10:08

@john Smith - unless assailant is family member or girlfriend.

      faith.less.712 - 2013-03-03 10:12

to clarify freak: reak /frek/ Noun A very unusual and unexpected event or situation: "a freak storm". Verb React or behave in a wild and irrational way, typically because of the effects of extreme emotion, mental illness, or drugs. The word freak fits the behavior purely by definition.

Guys the point is. This family seems to be obsessed with Guns. It has been in their family for generations. However it is also a member of this family who acted irresponsibly with a gun or intentionally killed someone with a gun. The question has to be asked if OP came from such a family of avid gun enthusiasts one would have thought he would have applied a bit better gun safety procedures than what he did that night. Is killing a natural thing second nature to them with an after thought of the serious ness of the action. Gun complacency is what comes to mind.

      Carl Freeman - 2013-03-02 16:45

I to own guns and have been around guns my whole life. However there are responsibilities that come with owning a gun or guns. Which I find hard to believe someone such as OP was not also taught. As a kid growing up with guns.

      Carl Freeman - 2013-03-02 16:47

I love the body armour ad at the bottomn of the page. I bet many ladies on here supporting OP will be getting few quotes for armour or bullet proof doors.

      Chris John - 2013-03-02 16:57

Hmmm - eight thumbs-down on the main (very sensible) comment, but a thumbs-up as soon as you admit you own guns yourself...

      Mabs - 2013-03-04 19:16

Yes Carl. I remember how my brothers were taught about responsibility about weaponary. The first "weapon" my son owned was a good old "catty" lol.... then a BB gun. I taught him about responsibility - but he still shot out a window or two! But he never shot at or injured a person or animal.

      Trix Duvenage - 2013-03-05 09:02

Agree with Carl. This guys brain was programmed by his old man to go for his gun. These people are not collecting precious stones or bows and arrows. The collect FIREARMS and that means they have a hostile streak subconsciously. Why try to beat around the bush with this? Oscar could have handeled this in many ways but he chose a gun. Burglar??? If you are dum enough to consider his burglar story then you should see a psiciatrist yourself. A burglar will never lock himself in a bathroom. That is bulls...t. If caught in the act the burglar would have run for the closest door that leads to the OUTSIDE! Oscar and the model had an argument and he threatened her [maybe even with his 9 mil] and she RAN for PROTECTION into the bathroom and locked herself in. Keep in mind that this little guy faced OTHER previous assault charges as well. His inferior feeling [no matter if he is a billionaire] makes him VULNARABLE when it comes to relationships. The whole 'paraplegic and the super model' scenario spells one single word "TROUBLE" This kind of relationship could NEVER last for ever. One need not be a genius to realise this fact. The only problem is that Oscar over-rated his own abilities to control his real FEELINGS when it comes to his beloved model. He was under the impression that his achievements on the sports field was enough to give him full control over his emotions in a love affair as well, while the are two VERY different fields.

      Trix Duvenage - 2013-03-05 09:11

How can you not see the connection? The model was KILLED by a GUN and the Oscar family collect GUNS. They must be half gun crazy to owe such a lot of fire arms in the first place and now that one of the incidentally used a gun to kill somebody, it has nothing to do with the fact that the whole family is gun-possessed? Dont make jokes mate

If u love guns that means u love to kill. So iam not surprised that murderer oscar killed his girlfriend. To them guns are toys and guns are designed to kill nothing else

Thats like saying that if you have a pen*s you love to rape??? or maybe not? There are many many gun owners in SA who have never killed anyone.

  • Elmaré Koekemoer - 2013-03-02 17:27

  • Nokukhanya Ngcongo - 2013-03-02 17:28

no wonder Oscar turned out like this, all he knows is 2 play wit guns & shoot

  • rob.tubbs.39 - 2013-03-02 17:29

I also love 'guns'. Does that make me a 'bad' citizen ? Leave these families alone now, they have enough to contend with.

One more comment. Was at Steers this afternoon when a marked Police vehicle pulled in with two members inside. In plain view of everybody, they got out and stored what appeared to be a semi automatic rifle in the boot of the car and then went inside to have a meal???? If you or I did this and were seen we would be prosecuted...

      Wike Mood - 2013-03-02 17:38

i prefer that, than an untrained cop sitting near me with a loaded semi auto rifle.
