Pistorius: Girlfriend's family devastated

2013-02-14 10:20

Pretoria - The family of Oscar Pistorius's deceased girlfriend has been left “devastated” by her death, a close family friend told City Press on Thursday.

Pistorius has been taken into police custody for shooting and killing a woman in his home, apparently his girlfriend. She has been named in various media reports as model and law graduate Reeva Steenkamp.

Beeld reported that according to a police spokesperson, her family were seen outside Silver Woods Country Estate where the shooting occurred.

Condolence messages streamed in on Twitter and Steenkamp's Facebook page from fans and friends, with many expressing shock and horror at her death.

“A life cut short too soon... praying for peace for both families...” a fan said on Steenkamp’s Facebook page.

“Heartbroken for Reeva Steenkamp's family and for Oscar Pistorius. This highlights how unsafe most South Africans feel...” former Miss South Africa Melinda Bam tweeted.

“To die at the hands of the one who loves you...mentally crippling for those who live to tell the tale! #ReevaSteenkamp #RIP," Dineo Ranaka tweeted.

Listen to police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Katlego Mogale confirm how they were alerted about the shooting and arriving on the scene.

My condolences. May God be with the family of Reeve Steenkamp. I'm so shocked, especially she a woman who had a very bright future ahead. May her soul rest in peace. Well, lets allow the law to take effect, this should not happen again. Its devastating seriously. Be strong in the Lord, He will see you through.

Another young life taken before it's time :( A sad symptom of a lawless and Godless country. Reeva, may you rest eternally in the arms of the angels. I pray only strength, acceptance and a positive future for her family and loved ones. Oscar, the worst day of your life continues. I pray a God's peace and love for you.

      john.kimbrough.1238 - 2013-02-14 18:50

Well stated.....I might add that all countries seem to be godless and lawless to some extent....

Sorry 4u Oscar and both families ~ such a tragedy our thoughts and our prayers r wih u??

  • nevergrowupgirl - 2013-02-14 11:02

I don't know what to believe any more!? I think the first report shouldn't even have been published until the media actually knew what the real story was. In the first report it said Ms. Steenkamp was shot twice, now other reports say 4 times. So the information is just too sketchy to actually release information. I think we are all (including me) so quick to jump up and either defend or diss an accused. Take Hansie Cronje as an example. He was the scapegoat for SA cricket, and it only just came to light that he was burnt at the stake for things his fellow cricketers also did, by his so called friends who tried to save their own backsides. I suppose the best thing to do is wait for the official comments from police. I just think it is such a terrible tragedy for everyone closely involved. :(

  • marge.desouza - 2013-02-14 11:03

  • Ds.jacobs1984 - 2013-02-14 11:10

1 +1 here does not equal 2 yet, once all the facts have been gathered then the 'judgement' may begin. Till now it is a shame about what happenned.

Just so sad and devestating, my prayers are with all concerned

  • Luvo van der Vena - 2013-02-14 11:28

the use of guns is regulated and all gun owners must fully appreciate this even in situations of perceived robbery or attack. i do not suppose, in law, one always has to shoot on site of an unrecognised person found anywhere in his premises. There should be other elements like the perceived perpetrator appearing to be armed and/or posing an immediate danger...

  • tlotlo.phele - 2013-02-14 11:30

I smell a rat , this crime story I don't buy , looks like the police don't buy it either , this is a crime of passion

      Joe FS ZA - 2013-02-14 12:55

if you are so good atsmelling rats, why not go and open a pest control centre, then your services could come in handy. you were not there so do not judge, rather shut up.

  • Jane - 2013-02-14 13:20

    Oh my God oscar why?

  • master.kay.7355 - 2013-02-14 17:26

Women have a natural urge to push their men a little bit further to the edge. That's natural. It takes a very strong man to live a successful marriage life. If you know you aren't strong enough, save yourself and stay out. No one has any right over life of another person. You can't justify killing another person. If all this is true I feel very sorry for Oscar while sending my sincerely condolences to the victim's family. I never wanted to believe this but now I can truly reveal that as South African men, we've got a problem. I think some social intervention is urgently needed in this country to change the way men view women in relationships and in general...

      assis.pontes.7 - 2013-02-14 18:14

I think life pushes people all the time and it takes a strong person to lead a successful life...but to brush all women and men with the same brush is lousy.

  • ndzalamah - 2013-02-14 19:58

Of course there is a rat smelling here. Questions dat the police should investigate... 1. Does she have a life cover and who is the beneficiary? 2. When he aimed the gun at her, didnt he see that it is his girlfriend? Who did he think he was aiming at or was he just shooting randomly? 3. If he shoot her two places, why didnt he stop shooting when he hit her once because one bullet is enough to make a lady to go down? 4. Does he have a working security alarm in his house? Did he press a panic button for help? 5. Was d lady wearing a blacover (excuse my spelling). Condolences to the family of d girl. As for the BOY, I want your Mclaren

      johan.jacobs.5268 - 2013-02-15 04:14

      thapelo.mabuela - 2013-02-15 06:39

I'm with you on that one, think before you pull that trigger and face the consequences of your actions thereafter,Oscar pumped 4 bullets into this woman's body and for that He is a coldblooded murderer, whether the court finds him guilty or not,he committed a coldblooded murder n he's a coldblooded murderer!

  • ron.samuels.129 - 2013-02-15 02:32

this is what happens in this lawless country, you sleep with the panic button in one hand and the gun in the other!

      thapelo.mabuela - 2013-02-15 06:34

I agree 100% with you,the government pumped 4 bullets into this hapless woman's body, they must just release Oscar,he's innocent and charge this coldblooded murderous government!bravo bruh

  • michael.moolman.10 - 2013-02-15 06:07

Well done to the news channel that devoted so much air time to the victim of this tragic incident. Thoughts to the family who lost a child. A shining light snuffed out so early. She will not be around to defend herself as 'justice' begins to play out. So, to those people who knew her, be brave, be strong, speak the truth, be her voice.

  • verusha.singh.77 - 2013-02-15 08:22

Its so sad that she was taken away during the prime of her life. What matters now, is what REALLY transpired behind CLOSED DOORS.

  • michael.klein.754570 - 2013-02-15 09:20
