Pistorius shouldn't get bail - Xingwana

2013-02-19 12:19

Pretoria - Paralympian Oscar Pistorius should be denied bail, Women's Minister Lulu Xingwana said outside the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on Tuesday morning.

Xingwana joined a group of women protesting outside the court where Pistorius, who is accused of murdering his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp, was applying for bail.

"We are here as the [ANC] Women's League, community and NGOs [non-governmental organisations] to say 'No bail'," said Xingwana.

"It does not matter what standing Pistorius has in society."

Double-amputee Pistorius was arrested shortly after Steenkamp was fatally wounded at his home in Pretoria on Thursday.

"We want him to be treated like other criminals that have been charged with murder or abuse of women," Xingwana said.

Those found guilty of such crimes should be punished with the "stiffest sentences".

She called the on government to tighten firearm regulations and to ban guns in homes.

"These guns, most of the time, are used to kill women and children in homes," Xingwana said.

"Our plan is to say: 'No guns in our homes'. We want to feel safe and secure in our homes."

Question: When and where did minister Xingwana get her degree in law?

      Sophie Ndungu - 2013-02-19 13:00

From the school where if one fails Matric twice, they are passed

      SouthAfrican1912 - 2013-02-19 18:37

Since when do you need a degree to voice your opinion about things that matters, perhaps if you were the Steenkamp's family you would not be saying this kind of rubbish

      digger.dighead - 2013-02-19 23:56

He must be treated like any other person up for murder??? That’s a load of rubbish. He is not your average SA murderer. He is well known, has a fixed address with family members that can be traced. He has fixed assets and a lot more than your average typical murderer that would just disappear into the "underworld". I personally think he is guilty, but he deserves to get bail until he is sentenced. This in the interest of future innocent people that might find themselves sitting in jail for months before having the chance to proove their innocents.

  • Teach Ndwebisa - 2013-02-19 12:31

lets let the law take its place .we must not judge any one

  • Mandilakhe Biza Buzani - 2013-02-19 12:36

  • Wilma van der Merwe - 2013-02-19 12:40

Typical. What about that black drunk driver that killed 5 runners. He got bail, he got his drivers license back!! So where do you draw the line?

      chumachienda - 2013-02-19 13:04

Seems the law is applied selectively in this country

      Irene Gounder - 2013-02-19 13:18

@Wilma..I agree wit u...why didn't dey climb down his throat...why can't Pistorious get bail why not?

  • Fudge Vr - 2013-02-19 12:42

The minister should not be calling for banning of guns! She should relook the situation of all the crimes that have been committed and call for the death penalty to be brought back! Thats the only way to deal with people like this! Why must they be able to live!

  • Dorian Rossouw - 2013-02-19 12:45

Weird how the minister and ANCWL wasn't protesting against Zuma when he was accused of rape,or how silent they are when it comes to the president who has more then one wife, isnt that blatant discrimination against women?...oh ja i forgot,Zuma is untouchable,he can do whatever he wants, with whoever he wants.

  • Dennis - 2013-02-19 12:46

    Oh shut up stupid

  • Paul Mphap - 2013-02-19 12:53

      Irene Gounder - 2013-02-19 13:10

I agree what does the law do to people who brutaly rape nd murder little kids ,elders, whew there is so much...what's the law saying about that...what happens to the people that go on a rampage and shoot and kill inocent people?

  • Irene Gounder - 2013-02-19 13:06

Why should guns be banned from our homes...we are gonna be butchered nd shot in our own homes...alarms are not trusted or worthwhile..cos criminals learn how 2 disarm...burglar bars are not useful cos they know how to remove and enter with all that on...why must we be punished and live in fear...cos Oscar used a gun to shoot his girlfriend ...why doesn sum1 tell us why he shot her...he could not have killed her for no reason...What made him do this...a good man could not want to go to jail because he feels lyk it...!

  • kris.hand.186 - 2013-02-19 13:08

Xingwana should not be asking for Pistorius to treated "like other criminals" as he's only accused at this point, not a criminal at all. It's highly emotive speech and would be deemed prejudicial here in the UK for a government minister to speak in this fashion; it could sway potential jurists and be perceived as exerting undue influence on the judicial process. As for banning guns from homes: it's hardly the appropriate time nor platform to discuss this matter but has the Minister quantified the amount of lives (of ALL South Africans, not just women and children) who've been saved from criminal injuries by residents with firearms..? Xingwana should perhaps consider all the facts before bandwagon-hopping and appearing uninformed and frankly naive.

  • Sophie Ndungu - 2013-02-19 13:13

How do women and children sleep peacefully in homes housing guns? Urgent Action should taken to take back ALL guns from the populace. No telling on MOOD SWINGS!!!!!

      kris.hand.186 - 2013-02-19 13:38

How do 'women and children' sleep in homes WITHOUT guns in them? You need to at least level the playing field against the criminals, better yet get ahead of them. Besides which, let's not pretend men have the monopoly on mood swings! Jeez..

  • garth.labuschagne - 2013-02-19 13:18

And where is the ANCWL at the bail hearings of rapists and pedophiles? Milking this story for political points is my guess.

  • dean.lotter.7 - 2013-02-19 13:19

"We want him to be treated like other criminals that have been charged with murder or abuse of women," Xingwana said. Be careful what you wish for minister...

  • Khumoetsile FinkyLoving Molebatsi - 2013-02-19 13:20

banning guns in our homes will incRease house breakings, unless the governmeNt does something about the crime rate in South Africa that keeps on increasing each an every second!!!! Pistorius needs to go to jail....for life.....!!

  • hymiem - 2013-02-19 13:20

Where was the ANCWL when Zumba was raping

  • Andre Baartman - 2013-02-19 13:21

Ag just Shut up plz! Shut up! Why u want to talk now but u never said 1 thing when Zuma was accused of rape? Xingwana and the Ancwl shouldn't talk now cause they did nothing when Zuma was accused!

  • Piero Alting - 2013-02-19 13:22

til their is complete evidence on the case people should mind their own bussiness and what does the ANC have to do with this case in the first place. Xingwana stay out of it its got nothing to do with you !!

  • barry.westhuizen - 2013-02-19 13:29

  • Yandisa Rwaai - 2013-02-19 13:29

Its typical of whites to get cranky when a black person has an opinion of a white person and unfortunately for you people she's right Oscar should not be granted bail!!!!!

      Lazola Coleridge Ntande Nqakula - 2013-02-19 13:38

      Oscar should be hanged...

      Akha Nofemela - 2013-02-19 13:38

look dumbie....race got nothing to do with this...its fact that everyone deserves a chance to be tried in the court of law whenever they are accused of a crime...its people like you who give black people like us a bad name...if you dont what to say...rather keep quiet

      kris.hand.186 - 2013-02-19 13:39

Is it her job as minister to tell the judge what to do? No, so she should be quiet and let justice be done impartially.

      kris.hand.186 - 2013-02-19 13:47

      Well said, Akha.

      Pinkie Motlatla - 2013-02-20 02:02

the cancer is feeding off the scraps of a personal matter just to score political points!

  • Akha Nofemela - 2013-02-19 13:34

this minister is can a person be treated like a criminal if he/she has not yet been convicted? what happened to innocent till proven guilty? Anene Booysen was raped and brutally murdered, have not heard anything from her regarding the accused in that case. what happened to everyone being accorded the same rights as enshrined in the constitution. Minister please think before you talk. and by the way i heard you were about to be axed for wasteful about we treat you like a fraud that you are?

      kris.hand.186 - 2013-02-19 13:52

Actually, she said the same things about the accused at Bredasdorp and sat with Anene's relatives at the hearing.. Anything for free publicity, no matter how unconstitutional her speeches!

      Yandisa Rwaai - 2013-02-19 14:01

@Nofemela you are very naive and you have an infantile manner of processing information. How should he be treated like a normal person who has not committed murder?? It is upto the public to have opinions on matters that are high profile! So if you want to make a poignant statement for you have some sort of white following think before you start clicking your keys imbecile!!!!

  • Thabo Mosehla - 2013-02-19 13:42

Minister wit all respect, who r u to judge? We read on newspapers about ur son abusing the wife under your roof yet u kept quite! How ironic. Sies man

      Stephen Chagadama - 2013-02-19 16:12

Its called Hypocrisy Thabo. They shed crocodile tears in public ,but once in the safety of their homes( paid by the poor man's tax) ,are oblivious to the needs of the same people they claim to represent.

  • Osama Bin Pascal - 2013-02-19 13:47

And she does not state the reason why he should not get bail except except that he killed a woman. WTF! Why should a person with no legs to stand on be denied bail. He is a SAcan citizen. He has a permanent address. He is not a flight risk. He has assets. He is not a threat to the victim since the victim is deceased. So WTF! Why deny him bail

      Riaan Coetzee - 2013-02-19 15:01

You are right, but people are emotional, and most will disagree with you. Bail is not denied to punish an accused.

      Osama Bin Pascal - 2013-02-19 17:28

Riaan people should learn not to think with emotions but apply their mind objectively. Will they get pleasure if he denied bail. What did it solve cause it is not going to bring back Reeva.

  • - 2013-02-19 13:54

Typical!!! Use every opportunity to push politics! Perhaps this minister should use some of the Millions she used on furniture to assist all these poor women who she supports!!!

      Jacques Kleinhans - 2013-02-19 16:49

      *supposedly* supports...

  • Vanini2 - 2013-02-19 14:00

This is why this country is the way it is. Racism is the past.. u ppl must stop using racism as an excuse... and minister u must becareful if ur words dont backfire... imagine yourself in Oscar's situation

  • Qhama Bona - 2013-02-19 14:08

The last thing this very sensitive issue needs is to be politicised.. Minister I think you should try and explain why your department spent an outrageous R2 million on furniture..

  • Sixolile Kenene - 2013-02-19 14:20

Density is a bad thing. A minister of women and children would be concerned and actually make a statement about this, even in the rape cases and ststistics that are released. Its appalling that there are people who use unrelated events to try prove a point. Its sickening and really uncalled for.

  • Celia Coates - 2013-02-19 14:47

I agree with the minister but I cannot recall her being present and this vocal at the killers of Anene Booysen's court appearances?

  • massimo.m.guglielmi - 2013-02-19 15:00

Why is that it's always the opposite party fighting against what they should do. So then why is its not standardized for all criminals? Typical!

  • massimo.m.guglielmi - 2013-02-19 15:01

I agree khris! But that's what they do! They need to mind their own business!

  • Trevor Moller - 2013-02-19 15:03

I agree abuse to woman is unacceptable but whats good for the goose is good for the gander u want to fry Pistorius what about that fat fa@t president of yours that raped and got away with it

  • nuraan.human - 2013-02-19 15:18

This is from the same minister who says the state will not even consider castration! Abuse against women? What a hypocritical joke!

  • PeterJJhb - 2013-02-19 15:26

What does this '' minister'' have to do with this case or the law. Politics must stay out of this.

  • PeterJJhb - 2013-02-19 15:27

Ha ha ha.... U tell her!!!!

  • Kobus Meissenheimer - 2013-02-19 15:37

Pistorius has not been found guilty by any court. Surely ministers should spend their time doing the job they get paid for. Making comments like this confirms that you don't have to be a genious to be a minister.

  • Yasmina Jones Sawant - 2013-02-19 16:05

shouldnt Lulu be spending the R2.1mil needed to re-decorate her office?? what she doing @ the court??

  • ferdi.preller - 2013-02-19 17:02

Where was the ANCWL and the minister with the Zuma rape case???? Bunch of hypocrites! Sick and tired of listening to this racist crap! Hang all the rapist and farm killers then too- net to Jub Jub! Dont make one individual the target! Everybody vote and shout against the death sentence but only white people should be hanged!??Moronic idiots!

  • wouterdewaal - 2013-02-19 19:40

Ban guns in the home. That just means the minister's personal bodyguard will have to stay outside. We, who pay for that bodyguard... well... we're on our own. Thanks, minister, but no thanks, OK?

  • gwenda.solomon - 2013-02-19 22:37

What is South Africa coming to?? What happened to so called " Ubuntu"??? Instead of protesting against Oscar, why not protest against the RAPE crisis??? Shameful! Disgusted! 24 000 rapes in 2 weeks as said on Carte Blanche this passed Sunday and they protesting over 1 murder case! Nelson Mandela explains the meaning of UBUNTU which clearly is not being practiced in the case of the rape crisis in SA, but rather protesting on a murder crime which should be seen as any other! It's not only guns that kill women and children! It's RAPE too! more over guns! You want to feel safe in your home? I am more scared over rape than a gun! People should start looking at the reality and not focus on one murder charge, but also focus on what is REALLY happening in SA!

  • Ben Nutt - 2013-02-20 17:47

ha ha ha !! which case study proves that legal fire arms are used on women and children most of the time ? secondly did you follow today's trial of the oscar saga the states theory was torn apart by roux (oscars legal team) it would seem thy do not have to much on him........ thy offers very reasonable and accurate explanations as to what happened and thy could actually support with evidence ! to this date the state has not yet offer concrete evidence nor have thy given us motive for the crime what a joke the npa is ! and then the law clearly states one is innocent until proven guilty and the last time n checked we are still busy with the bail hearing ! so please find your self a job more suited to your IQ like doing filing at the national archive something that does not require any in depended intellectual thinking as you are clearly not capably of such actions

  • Lindsay Kingston - 2013-02-27 14:08

But it's ok for the guy who ended lives in a hit and run to be given bail and, oh by the way he just got his drivers license back pending trial! C'mon!! PUHLEEEZE Guns are, in the most part used to kill women and children?!?!? WTF?!?! I wonder if the Ministers brain cells have ever bumped into eachother

  • Guy Goes - 2013-02-27 15:37

Poor lulu she is truly representative of the cabinet she serves. Increasingly one can see the enormous failures of many leaders to add even the slightest amount of considered leadership.

      Ruan Roodt - 2013-02-28 12:08

Hi Sailorguy this lady is forgetting the fact that her own men and boys and even her president are a threat to the safety of women.Even raping babies of two years old.In the apartheidsregime women and children were more safe.Anti Lulu is just an embarrasment like her fellow woman minister who wanted to set up a commission of enquiry to ascertain what caused lightning after children were killed in NAtal by lightning.

  • Charl Charl - 2014-05-06 11:19
