Pit baby: mom may plead guilty

A 29-YEAR-OLD woman who is charged with attempting to murder her newborn baby by throwing the child into a pit toilet, is to consult her lawyer about possibly pleading guilty.

This was said in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday when the accused, Nontobeko Ngcobo, made her second brief appearance in court in connection with the incident.

Her legal aid attorney, Jay Sundar, told magistrate M. Bhoikutso he had not had time for a detailed consultation with Ngcobo yesterday, but she did tell him she is considering a guilty plea.

In the circumstances the accused mother abandoned her bail application.

Instead the case was adjourned until tomorrow to give Ngcobo time to make a decision after discussing her options with her lawyer.

The baby girl was recovered from a pit toilet in Elandskop on June 6 after residents called police and alerted them to the sound of a baby crying inside the pit
