Plane crashes on PE beach, only dog hurt

2012-11-12 09:56

Port Elizabeth - A shocked Port Elizabeth man has described how he was playing with his dog on the beach when a small plane came crashing down.

Johann Terblanche from Uitenhage was not injured but his dog Tessa, lost an eye and suffered a leg injury, reported Die Burger.

A student pilot was apparently on a training flight when he noticed smoke and had to make an emergency landing.

He headed for the only bit of land he could see, which was Bluewater Bay Beach near Port Elizabeth.

“Tessa and I were playing with the ball on the beach when a plane flew down low over me. I had to fall down to escape being hit,” said Terblanche.

An emotional Terblanche said veterinary treatment for the dog was already more than R1 000 on Sunday afternoon.

The shocked but unhurt pilot did not want to speak to the media.

      Its all the reporting sir....

Lol, my Foxy was attacked by a German Shepherd, cost me R10500 for Vet bills. Then you want to cry!

  • willem.leroux.75 - 2012-11-12 10:10

    Glad the Pilot made it!

  • pierre.basson.94 - 2012-11-12 10:15

I wish these people in the Buddy Holly little noisemakers will make an effort not to endanger other people when things goes wrong - Cause they usually need to use some public road or beach for their emergencies!!!!!

      Jeremy - 2012-11-12 10:26

Don'tbe an idiot pierre. If something DOES go wrong then the pilot has to put the plane down somewhere - and on a beach is probably the best place to do it! Frankly, the pilot's life - and the plane's value - is a helluva lot more important than that of one small dog - who wasn't killed, just hurt!

      typersa.baddy - 2012-11-12 10:57

@Jeremy - I agree with the first part of your reply, but do not agree that a plane is more valuable than a man's best friend!! The plane is a man made object that can be replaced. A dog can mean a lot more to the owner, could hold a lot of sentimental value. Glad the pilot, and the dog and his owner came out ok. Not worried about a stupid plane at all!!!

      kobie.nel1 - 2012-11-12 16:05

Ever thought about the condition of the plane compared to the condition of the pilot after landing? To a great extend it is directly comperable. Sorry, I love my dogs and animals, but not to the extend that it affects my intellegence.

      pierre.basson.94 - 2012-11-13 14:18

Didn't you read the article properly - the guy playing with the dog was also almost run over by the plane!!!!

  • kenpeg.dawson - 2012-11-12 10:19

    Poor puppy, lucky man.

  • jackie.m.dickson - 2012-11-12 10:29

Shame poor dog! Must have got a huge fright.

      pdvermaak - 2012-11-12 14:00

Would like to see what the dogs reaction is when his owner tell him, "wil oubaas se honne bietjie op die strant gaan speel." Can see the dog's face, WHAT, ARE YOU MAD. BHWA HA HA HA. Sorry, but very funny.

  • gail.hayesbean - 2012-11-12 10:46

I'm glad that both the dog and the pilot survived - he was someone's son, brother, father etc. To owner of the dog - you have a cheap vet! It cost me R5,000 to have my dog's eye removed after she developed a problem. My dog was also a Tessa. Happy to know she is okay though.

Stick to activities on the ground mate...

  • theMichaelHawthorne - 2012-11-12 10:59

Oh and btw every person on that beach was endangered by the incompentent student who recklessly gets into an obviously dangerous unmantained aeroplane... so one person with a expensive plane vs a few dog and people you still have to come vomit comment here.... get off the internet and go back to orania please...

      marcel.celliers.7 - 2012-11-12 11:26

And you base your senseless comment on what??? Idiot!!!

Only a dog. Only? What gives? Humanocentric BS. All creatures matter. Glad the pilot is OK. Pity about the plane of course and lets hope the pooch recovers as fully as possible from a nasty ordeal.

      rohin.jadin - 2012-11-12 11:57

yeah, that headline makes it seem that it's okay cause "only" a dog got hurt. Losing an eye is not a minor injury. The doc should recover but it's still unfortunate.

      ryan.p.lewis.56 - 2012-11-12 12:18

You people are full of emotion, a dogs life isn't nearly as valuable as a humans. The dog was only hurt, that's quite a good report considering its a plane emergency landing on a public beach. There may have been a couple bluebottles that died as well, why did they have to die :( :(

      rohin.jadin - 2012-11-12 12:29

ryan, i'm sure the owner of the dog wouldn't agree with you.

      marc.hugo.75 - 2012-11-12 13:03

What? Why? Who said so, fruitgum? Other humans? God? Your God? Your attorney? Your support group? Huisgenoot magazine? Blow it out where the sun doesn't shine mate. Even a nitwit knows all that stuff was made up because it suits us.

      johan.mostert.967 - 2012-11-12 13:28

Well Ryan, dogs don't climb over my walls robbing me, so I care more about animals than humans.

      ryan.p.lewis.56 - 2012-11-12 15:10

Cannot believe u hold a dogs life above that of a humans, and u think u have the moral high ground. Thats messed up

  • beverly.young3 - 2012-11-12 11:52

Well, I know NOTHING about of the experienced 'bush pilots', and his mate an instructor of the air school here once said......."it is always the pilots fault". Okay so lets chew on this now. I think though, they were talking about when there were stict tests and guidelines as the a planes safety. There are SO many stories that they relate as to the stupidity of pilots. eg. student and instructor flying out to sea from here, to see a pod of whales....stupid, stupid. Both dead. Sad story, sorry for the poor little dog.

  • leslene.dunn - 2012-11-12 12:16

What the heck - poor dog - and yes, dogs are allowed on certain beaches - not only humans have rights!!!!

  • Suzanne Viljoen - 2012-11-12 14:18

So the pilot hates dogs because they don't rob misses the man takes the dogs eye out with expensive plane because its cheaper than taking him to a vet and kills a few bluebottles as well! Calm down! Okay okay I'm going LOL

      antonio.merola.5 - 2012-11-22 16:55

I dont hate dogs...i have 5 dogs in Rome house...and the day 1 of them passed away i cryed for months, and i went in pls dont say i hate dogs, i love animals more then me...

Antonio you did well boet!! You reacted in the correct way and saved lives. That dog should habe been on a leash!! No one can comment if they have never flown a plane or had to do a forced landing, and especially on the beach!!you did very well and should be proud of yourself!! Well done! I assume that if u were on ur night nav's then u don't even have your COM or 200hours? The important thing is to get back into the plane and carry on with your training!! Mabey I will chat to over the radio one day!! Again!! You should be proud of yourself!! Keep flying and Keep safe!
