Poachers kill 100 rhino in two months

2012-09-12 22:19

Johannesburg - Poachers killed 100 rhino in less than two months, a surge in killings that took the tally for the year to 381, authorities said on Wednesday.

More than half of the animals were killed in the Kruger National Park with the rate of the slaughter likely to mean that the year's final tally will pass last year's carnage of 448 animals poached.

The department of environmental affairs said: "The latest rhino poaching statistics indicate that a total of 381 rhino have been killed since the beginning of this year."

With roughly 20 000 rhino, South Africa is home to nearly 80% of the world population.

But there has been a devastating increase in poaching in recent years as black market demand for rhino horn has grown with numbers leaping from 13 in 2007 to 333 in 2010.

Heightened security measures have failed to stop the criminal syndicates that officials say are responsible for the killing.

The animals' distinctive horns are hacked off to be smuggled to the lucrative Asian black market, where the fingernail-like substance is falsely believed to have powerful healing properties.

On the black market, the horns are worth their weight in gold.

Soldiers and specialist investigators have been deployed to national parks to battle the poachers.

Despite the rise in the numbers of killings since July, the number of arrests has slightly gone up to 199 from 176 suspects held two months ago.

if the government was serious in stopping this they would have done it long time ago. So they are not serious and most probably part of the problem. They most probably made a promise to the Chinese - kickback, paback, whatever

      denis.dendrinos - 2012-09-13 08:52

and it takes these poor creatures almost a year to be born......

      arthur.hugh - 2012-09-13 08:58

This is crazy... with all the hype in the media I would have thought they'd have stepped up their game, apparently not :-( At this rate the Rhino really will be extinct in the next few years.

      sekalf.nroc - 2012-09-13 09:15

Problem is that some corrupt SAN Parks officials have their hands in this trade.

      dewald.galjaard - 2012-09-13 09:18

Ok this is a long shot, but, if the government isn't helping then how about we solve it ourselves. How many items are NOT made in Asia? Buy those. Buy local. You'll see how quickly this ends. IMMEDIATELY.

      amanda.vandenberg.758 - 2012-09-13 10:15

The poaching seems to have become a frenzied killing spree, for the last 2years everybody has been has been in an uproar about the killings and sooo-oo much has been suggested and debated of how to stop it but not much is coming from our pathetic government. How the killings in the Kruger Park is going to be stopped is to get rid of Mabinda and to get somebody in charge who really cares. With the soldiers there the killings have escalated, which really leaves a person wondering what they are doing? And what happened to all the money that is the public is supplying to try and save these animals?

      janice.mcmaster.92 - 2012-09-13 10:53

      This makes me positively sick!!!!!!

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-09-13 11:35

Truth24, I have been boycoting Aisan products for a few years now. But people flocking to Chinese shops because they are cheap are not helping.

  • Lesetja Sema - 2012-09-12 22:48

cANCer government must ashamed! Minister of Environmental must step down. She is clueless

      desertratbkf - 2012-09-13 08:53

As are the majority of them!

      amanda.vandenberg.758 - 2012-09-13 10:18

Agree she should be fired. This government cannot even supply books for the pupils in this country so how are they going to stop the killing of the rhino?

  • bryn.barker - 2012-09-12 22:50

What I don't understand is why the remaining Rhinos haven't had their horns painted with that red substance that makes them unpalatable and induces illness. Surely this problem could be massively mitigated if the Asians knew that South African horns couldn't be consumed.

      kala.bafazi - 2012-09-13 10:11

Similar means have been employed in the past. The result was that the poachers were still shooting the rhino out of pure spite.

  • rudi.botha.376 - 2012-09-12 23:04

This is beyond me! I bet the people who are suppose to look after the Park is involved. I mean some Vets were arrested because they were in possession of rhino horns. Maybe some cabinet ministers also have a few...or at least have part in the trade of rhino horn.

  • ivana.rudman - 2012-09-12 23:04

WWF must transfer them to a safe Country for their existance

  • glen.e.huysamer - 2012-09-12 23:14

The ANC is just absolutely useless in anything, it would not surprise anyone if it was found that they are involved in this Rhino poaching, there is no way the over one hundred Rhino have been killed with out police, government knowing who is involved, this is a ludicrous, and a mandatory jail term must be put in place immediately for anybody who is caught with the slightest involvement in any kind of poaching, Rhino or otherwise. Bail should only be allowed under the strictest terms, and all assets of people arrested should be immediately frozen until after investigations are completed, ensuring that once convicted in court that assets are forfeited to the state. Can the ANC do this, have they even got a clue where to begin getting anything under control? We all know the answer, that is why I am leaning to becoming a Malema supporter more and more, because it does not matter if the ANC is eventually run by him or destroyed by him. The ANC remains useless in everything, they can't even steal without being caught. Who is the minister of environmental affairs, come out come out where ever you are, what is your plan? Are you also going to put the entire SANDF on alert.??????

      kala.bafazi - 2012-09-13 10:13

The SANDF are busy fighting the scourge of Malema. The panic he has raised amongst the ranks has the SANDF in a quandry. Until malema has stopped taking to the "soldiers" the SANDF has put the country's defence on hold.

  • jomar.delange - 2012-09-12 23:30

POISON THE HORN!!! wtf are you waiting for??

      kala.bafazi - 2012-09-13 10:14

It was done in the past but the poachers would shoot the rhino anyway out of pure spite.

  • phillipmongatane - 2012-09-12 23:34

Wow this is getting out of hand, whats the government doing to protect this species? This years Rhino poaching has serpassed that of last year already. What ever is being done to protect this species is not enough, much should be done to save them. Soon we wont have any more rhinos in the wild.

  • rudi.botha.376 - 2012-09-12 23:43

If I catch them I will poach their cocks.

  • taz.arbi - 2012-09-12 23:46

Do we know what Kruger do with the orphaned calves of the females that are poached? If they are not rehabilitating them then you can increase the number of rhino lost due to poaching quite significantly.

  • immackenzie - 2012-09-13 01:03

I agree the continued existence of the rhino is the important thing. Stricter sentencing and stauncher policing of parks should be instituted.

  • PrettyUsefulArt - 2012-09-13 01:18

Absolutely heartbreaking. Sis man. Horny blerrie f*ckers!! Haven't they heard of Viagra? Hope their dicks fall off. Grrrrr!!!!!

  • peter.mokoena.31 - 2012-09-13 05:14

The syndicates are operating right there within the confines of those given mandates to protect. If their life style can be audited you will find a rot. Soon our heritage will be wiped out due to the scourge corruptions in our parks, Mpumalanga nogal. If our rangers don't love what they do, then we would not have anymore rihnos soon.

  • - 2012-09-13 06:35

Send the army. If they can protect the whole country's boarder, surely Kruger National Park is a 'walk in the park'. Sickening stats.

      johnwilliam.roberts - 2012-09-13 06:48

have you seen the army here on the limpopo border ?all they do is sit around all day listening to their i pods and on weekends they go to thelodges and get pissed as rats i see this every weekend !

  • mart.botha - 2012-09-13 07:25

South Africans as a whole must take this as a personal attack on this country. Each and everyone one of us needs these rhinos 'with horns' running around wild, free and safe in the bush. The rhino is one of the 'Big 5' which attracts foreign visitors to our shores to spend their money. Every single one of us, from the Minister of Environmental Affairs to the homeless beggar on the streets needs these visitors and their money. When they stop visiting and spending/investing their money, more people will starve and suffer. Please South Africa, these organised crime syndicates are also running the drug, arms and human trafficking business in South Africa, they are destroying our country and our childrens lives. Demand that our Government stops putting up with this nonsense and starts wielding a big stick to these thieves and destroyers of our societies. Demand that the Government protects us the law abiding citizens because all they seem to be doing is protecting and attracting more and more criminals to our shores. If your child is kidnapped and sold into sex slavery in Asia, what is your wish for the kidnappers and their they are laughing at us because their money is capable of buying souls in this land at the moment. Destroy the Cancer before it destroys us.

  • millionwatts1 - 2012-09-13 07:26

How many Rhino die of natural causes in two months? With so much awareness of Rhino poaching I don't believe 100 Rhino can be killed by poachers in Two months. Maybe 10 or 20 but not 100.

      bob.mcmillen.564 - 2012-09-13 08:14

1 watt, so you reckon 80 or 90 rhino die of natural causes every two months and only 10 or 20 are actually poached, please enlighten us all, where did you dream up this little gem of information.

      millionwatts1 - 2012-09-13 08:45

If 100 Rhino are still being poached then there is something seriously wrong with the way parks are being run here.

      sekalf.nroc - 2012-09-13 09:12

      now you got it!

ONE POACHER, ONE BULLET!!!!!That's the only way to do it!!!!! Untill there is a "political will' to stop this massacure, it will continue. Time for the corrupt ANC goverment to pull their fingers out of their arses....STOP TALKING AND START DOIING!!!!!!!

  • Vince.York - 2012-09-13 08:09

ANC unwritten policies expand to far more than just dead farmers and rhino and dead contracts where their GREED is without limit. Black Diamonds are being extremely short sighted in respect to everything, so WAKE UP BOYS & GALS....just now you won't have any more easy money left to rip off (even via easily flourished signatures on hollow BBBEE & AA contracts) because there will be nothing left to generate money from.

  • chris.khanye - 2012-09-13 08:31

savage barbarians ....WTF 100 rhino in less than two months ...Every rhino deserves a bodyguard n horns must have a tracking device

  • shaylene.stenger - 2012-09-13 10:51

  • olivia.karnak - 2012-09-13 10:53

This just breaks my heart. How on earth are we going to stop this. It's like these poachers are growing by the numbers, and too few protecting the rhinos

  • jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-09-13 11:33

Have you noticed any activity from the Minister? No, it is left up to groups overseas to pay attention to this tradegy. She's just another Zuma clown, not worthy of the chair she sits on.

  • enlightened.bowman - 2012-09-13 15:29

Has the ANC got a stake in this as well?? For crying out loud, HERE is a place where one might deploy the army and kill these creatures. Bring them to me, I'll do and slow too

  • enlightened.bowman - 2012-09-13 15:30

The easiest is to introduce the death penalty not only for poaching but also for posessing and/ or consuming Rhino horn.

  • Johnny - 2012-09-13 16:23

what are all the so called rangers at Kruger park doing. They are all involved as well as the Sangoma's and other personel higher up at Kruger Park. All are corrupt. This is a sad state of affairs. What now Edna Molewa.????
