Poachers leave death threats for rangers

2012-12-11 08:40

Pretoria - Rhino are not the only ones in danger of harm from poachers - rangers in the Kruger National Park are now receiving death threats.

The head of the environmental crime investigation unit at the park, Kenn Maggs, said members of the team frequently found messages targeting specific individuals, reported the Times Live.

Maggs said: “They would leave signs in the sand near the border telling a specific ranger, 'We're coming for you'. We have to adhere to the rule of the land. They don't."

Maggs said his team was fighting a low-intensity war against the poachers who had this year killed 381 rhinos in the Kruger National Park while the total number for the whole of country was 618.

Maggs said at any given time there could be as many as 15 groups of poachers in the park, which is more than 20 000 km² - the same size as Israel.

He believed that many of the poachers had some sort of military training "and belonged to some kind of militia.

"And they know the bush and how to hide their tracks."

Maggs said when a poacher was recently arrested, R5.1m was found in an open trunk in his garage.

The same man had been arrested a month-and-a-half earlier with R3m in his car.

And what is our "wonderful" government doing about this?? NOTHING!! Even Google pitched in and sponsored unmanned aircraft. And these stupid fat cats just do nothing!! Shame on you!

      rodney.louis.7 - 2012-12-11 09:24

Get in the Army ! .these poachers have sophisticated equipment We should take the fight to them ..

      piet.pompies.12 - 2012-12-11 09:36

Zuma won't let the army intervere because these horns goes to China and China is south Africa's next boss!!

      darryl.maze1 - 2012-12-11 09:40

What army Rodney. Our are to lazy to do anything, plus Zuma dont wanna spend money on sending the army in as that money will have to come from the money being used to upgrade his home.

      theo.schoeman.71 - 2012-12-11 09:42

@rebel.roots.7 - exactly my gut feel as well. I smell a rat and a big fat one at that

      Eterni80 - 2012-12-11 09:54

the head of the cANCer is busy protecting his own horn and making sure it stays on the throne.

      pdvermaak - 2012-12-11 11:18

Poachers must be shot on site, servivers must be shot again.

      etienne.blenkinsop - 2012-12-11 11:48

I believe they ARE doing something. Some of them are also getting rich out of this.

      thabang.bonang.7 - 2012-12-11 13:19

We have National Intelligence Agency(NIA). My question is if they are really intelligency for the country, why are they not able to identify all these syndicates from Vietnam, China, Thailand, embassies and S.Africans involved before they commit these crimes. Makes me question how effective they are. More than 600 rhinos killed in one year is a lot of Rhinos.

  • rohin.jadin - 2012-12-11 08:46

even more reason to shoot on sight.

      thabang.bonang.7 - 2012-12-11 13:22

It's easy for syndicates to find new recruits to do the poaching. A lot of people that are poor and willing to risk death just so that they can be able to support their families. The main this is for the syndicates to be caught and given a long sentence that will send a warning to other syndicates.

      rohin.jadin - 2012-12-11 15:37

i agree, it's the foot soldiers that get killed, but if it means that we reduce the number of foot soldiers, then it's still a step forward.

  • ryan.a.smith.3958 - 2012-12-11 08:49

    lace the horns with poison

      rohin.jadin - 2012-12-11 10:09

remember they tried that with the one rhino, but the whole anesthesia process and everything involved is very risky - that one rhino died.

  • ashley.merwe.1 - 2012-12-11 08:51

These men are arrested more then once yet they are set free to cause havock and continue poaching. I think the rangers should just shoot the bastards.

      Mike - 2012-12-11 10:25

Shoot on sight then leave the bodies as animal feed - two birds with one stone !?!

      hugh.olphart - 2012-12-11 12:25

you read the comment, he had R5.1mil in his garage and R3mil in the boot of is car. You can buy a lot of favors with that kind of cash. A big get out of jail card..

  • jose.d.santos.9041 - 2012-12-11 08:55

the poacher was caught a month before, so why was he released?? shoot these bastards

      koos.meyer.52 - 2012-12-11 09:35

Useless ANC Govt at it's best...

  • lwazi.sithole.9 - 2012-12-11 09:01

bring in the army, good training plus they can get to shoot

      sheamus.drager - 2012-12-11 09:09

I agree. Create teams, one ranger and a section(10 soldiers) to partol the park.

      trevor.izatt - 2012-12-11 09:10

Hey Biko ....... there no hotels for the troops to sleep in......what must our army sleep in the that not dangerous hahaha

      arie.g.potgieter - 2012-12-11 09:54

@Treorcentury, You were too bloody scared to join the Army, otherwise you would not have made such a stupid comment. The SANDF are deployed at the Kruger National Park. Who do you think killed all the poachers mentioned in previous news briefings? What the hell have you done to protect the rhinos?

  • nosiphom.mazibuko - 2012-12-11 09:05

give rangers more potent weapons and a license to kill!

  • webstorm.isp.5 - 2012-12-11 09:06

Come on guys, how can you expect a couple of rangers to fight against military trained people, why dont we send in our military trained for this, and that will shoot on site? 618 of them gone in one year, thats pathetic, I cannot believe this is the best we can do, our military sits around doing nothing, use them, get some tactical training in them and most of all stop these assh@les ASAP

      trevor.izatt - 2012-12-11 09:16

Our army does not sit around................they GO ON STRIKE

      piet.pompies.12 - 2012-12-11 09:29

Zuma won't let the army intervere because these horns goes to China and China is south Africa's next boss!!

      gareth.coats - 2012-12-11 09:37

To my knowledge, our army are present in the park for anti-Rhino poaching missions. I've seen them there myself recently.

  • steveroodt - 2012-12-11 09:09

Inject the horn with Necrotizing fasciitis when the skin starts falling off the Asian buyers body may be they will learn not to kill our beloved Rhino

      gareth.coats - 2012-12-11 09:54

nectroizing fasciitis - great! NOT! You're just opening pandora's box for thousands of innocent people.

      Mike - 2012-12-11 10:27

      @Gareth: Innocent my ar&e ! They are the end-users.

  • eland.snitbul - 2012-12-11 09:15

Yep, shoot on site... why should their life be in danger.. Once poacher realize they will be shot dead if caught.. they wont steal or try stealing tha much

      darryl.maze1 - 2012-12-11 09:47

I agree to. Shoot on sight. These poachers dont deserve to face our justice system. They are barbarians and should be treated like barbarians.

  • bless.boswell - 2012-12-11 09:16

    Won't that hurt the rhino?

  • jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-12-11 09:21

When poachers are arrested with that kind of money in their possession, isn't it time they go to prison?.

  • xoli.mabiya - 2012-12-11 09:21

Scum of the Earth, Leave our Rhinos and our people alone..

  • richard.hipkin - 2012-12-11 09:29

Time for Executive Outcomes to be contracted..

  • darryl.maze1 - 2012-12-11 09:42

These poachers must be shot on site. If they are leaving death threats for the rangers well then these poachers dont deserve to face the law, Shoot on site Game rangers.

  • Kurt Kassen - 2012-12-11 09:47

what must be done is the govt must redeploy the commandos to hot spots where the rhinos are being poached the most and leave them with one order shoot on site and just bury them there as they want to die there these poachers

  • mfumbayelangabi.silwane - 2012-12-11 09:58

Mr Cele should be brought back as a Ranger so he can shoot to kill,we really need him.

      chauke.xahumba.1 - 2012-12-11 12:46

if Cele can be deployed everything will be in order

  • Brian Dorning - 2012-12-11 10:00

And yet our ANC just stands usual.

      rohin.jadin - 2012-12-11 10:11

I was listening to our minister this morning on 702, our hunting industry is worth 13 billion a year - and therefor they're trying to protect that . No one can put a price on an extinct animal - yet again, blinkered greedy politicians looking after their own pockets.

  • Brian Dorning - 2012-12-11 10:00

    Marikana SAPS must get involved!

  • mart.botha - 2012-12-11 10:11

Justice is a big fat twat. We must stop taking knives to a gun fight and calling it a 'low intensity war'. It is only a low intensity war if you are fighting it at low intensity Maggs. Catch a wake up....this is an opportunity for government to show that we are capable of protecting this country's sovereignty. At the moment we are slaves to criminality and this is just not good enough.

  • sean.odonnell.1466126 - 2012-12-11 10:26

Like so many other problems facing SA, we have all the resources, but not the political will to sort these matters out.

  • oscar.manamela - 2012-12-11 10:41

Somone took chinese millions and they will never go agaist them, sies man

  • marie.delarey - 2012-12-11 10:54

My question is if(God forbid when) the rhinos are extinct - what will they kill next to feed their greed????

  • etienne.blenkinsop - 2012-12-11 11:48

I believe they ARE doing something. Some of them are also getting rich out of this.

  • rob.mcalister.71 - 2012-12-11 12:46

White men can't jump Zots can't govern

  • nathan.g.moss - 2012-12-11 13:01

Bring in the Marikana police. They’re not afraid to pull the trigger.

  • tina.baer - 2012-12-11 13:28

sheesh! With money like that involved it is indeed a really tough battle for us.

  • clivegoss - 2012-12-11 17:38

Put our "striking army" out there. They re expendable. If the poachers dont get them the rhino's will

  • mandy.robinson.5074 - 2012-12-12 08:59

When will the government declare a state of emergency?? When all the rhinos are gone? Which part of "EXTINCT" do they not understand??? Amazing that hundred of millions can be spent on private homes, entertainment and stupid celebrations, while the rhino genocide continues. Surely the government should step in and impose economical sanctions upon those countries, and implore other countries to do the same.

  • Bdamons - 2012-12-12 11:11

If all Rhino`s are killed eventually ,then our elephants are in danger. When these are killed, then it’s our teeth

  • Bdamons - 2012-12-12 11:14

when the world read millions in rhino horns ,everybody came rushing in for a horn or two, so that means ,our rhino`s will not be there soon

  • nick.hill.52493 - 2012-12-12 11:29

    @ rodney.louis.7 .... what army ... DANDF couldn't fight their way out of a wet paperbag !!
