Johannesburg - Five people were arrested during a protest in Protea Glen South in Soweto on Saturday, Johannesburg metro police said .

Spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said the five, along with 22 people arrested on Thursday, would appear in the Protea Magistrate's Court on Monday,

They would face charges ranging from public violence to malicious damage to property and looting.

Police earlier dispersed the protesters by firing rubber bullets, but no one was injured or arrested.

The protesters burnt tyres, blockaded roads and threw stones.

Minnaar said there was a strong police presence and roads were reopened on Saturday afternoon.

Protests in the area started on Thursday with locals demanding better service delivery.

The protests erupted again on Saturday.
